Let's watch a few plays.

To celebrate Christmas, I present to you, this week's GIF Breakdown (with extra GIFs!).

Second quarter, :34 remaining. I think everyone here was expecting the New York Jets to run the ball once for about five yards, waste a timeout, then run again for no yards, and that would be the half. Instead, the Jets line up in a pass-heavy formation with four wide receivers and Geno Smith lined up in the shotgun. Looks like a Hail Mary to me. Instead, the Jets go with the draw, and Bilal Powell manages to evade several defenders to set the team up for a field goal to tie the game going into the half.

Leger Douzable, aka LEGEND Douzable, has got serious moves.

Third quarter, 9:22 remaining. Our dear friend Xes&Os already ably noted Dee Milliner's interception came on a zone defense, but I wanted to highlight this play again. Milliner has gotten better at tracking the ball in recent weeks and making a play on it. Here, he's reading the quarterback the entire time and has already started to break towards the receiver before Jason Campbell even turns to him, and once Campbell begins his windup, speeds up to snag the ball before it gets to the receiver. Milliner has help from above and knows he can be aggressive, and this time, his hands don't let him down and he comes down with it.

Fourth quarter, 3:26 remaining. This is a pretty straightforward play where we get to see some of Geno Smith's progress. First, note the clean pocket. The offensive line did a very good job giving Smith space to step up. Second, Smith looks off not one but two reads before taking off. Third, jeez, that dude is fast.

Let's watch a play.

I think we should end this week's breakdown on a high note, don't you?

Q3, 9:36 remaining. The game is out of reach at this point, but that doesn't mean there can't be a cool play. It's first-and-ten, and the New York Jets are in 11 personnel, which means one running back, one tight end, and three wide receivers. The Miami Dolphins are in a 4-2-5 defense, with safety Jimmy Wilson lined up across from Greg Salas in the slot. However, at the snap, Wilson blitzes, where he has a chance to take Chris Ivory down at the line of scrimmage, but literally jumps over him. Ivory plunges into the pile but immediately retreats, and the race is on.

There are a few things noteworthy about this play. While Jeff Cumberland stands his man up, the right side of the line isn't really able to get any push on the play, which is why Ivory is met at the line of scrimmage. The second thing is Ivory really has tremendous balance, which we've seen a few times. Finally, I love that Ivory is looking for more yards at the end. When he knows he can't get anything extra, he puts his head down, protects the ball, and looks for contact.

Let's watch a play.

Alright, let's get to it!

Q2, 8:02 remaining. It's third-and-twelve, and it looks like Rex Ryan is going to bring the house. One of the guys at the line of scrimmage immediately peels back into zone coverage, and a second soon follows. All of the remaining cornerbacks are in one-on-one coverage, and they are all glued to their man. This is one of those plays where immediately, everything goes wrong for the Miami Dolphins. Quinton Coples and Calvin Pace immediately get pressure on the edge, which would normally force Ryan Tannehill to step up (although he does jump forward a bit). The problem? Muhammad Wilkerson is right in his face to crush him as soon as he throws it, leading to a lame duck which Antonio Cromartie just goes up and gets.

This is one of those rare plays, by any team, where every single person on the field executed their job the way it was intended. Nobody was open, and the pass rush got there quickly. Even if Tannehill's intended receiver had caught a bullet, which was no guarantee, it's doubtful they would have gotten the first down. This was one of the few good plays from the game, so let's enjoy it.

Let's watch a play.

Hey folks. It's that time of week again where we break down some plays by the New York Jets from their previous matchup. Unfortunately, as you can imagine, the last few weeks haven't generated many positive plays, but let's see what we can find.

Q1, 1:27 remaining. It's 4th-and-1, and the Miami Dolphins are showing run. They're in 21 personnel, two running backs, one tight end, and two wide receivers. Accordingly, the Jets have six men at the line of scrimmage, and end up sending just four on the right side, creating an illusion of blitz while dropping most into coverage over the middle. Ryan Tannehill looks to his primary read, Brian Hartline, and immediately recognizes that he's beaten Dee Milliner, who missed Hartline when trying to jam him.

However, Tannehill underthrows the ball and Milliner is able to find the ball in the air, which he has done much better with recently. If you're wondering why Ed Reed is late to get to the ball, it's because he's shaded to the left side to help out Antonio Cromartie.

I think this play shows a few things. The first is that Milliner still needs work, which I don't think anyone will deny. However, there are signs of improvement from the first round pick. Since the New Orleans Saints game, he's gotten significantly better at finding the ball in the air and tracking it, while making a play on it. In fact, by my count he's had four near-interceptions in the past two weeks that, if caught, would have changed perception of him considerably. I'm encouraged by his development, even if it is still painfully obvious how much work he has to do.

Let's watch some plays.

In the third part of this week's GIF series between the New York Jets and the Buffalo Bills, let's watch one of Matt Simms' plays.

Fourth quarter, 9:41 remaining. The Jets are lined up in 21 personnel, which means two running backs, one tight end, and two wide receivers. The Bills are in a standard 3-4 defense, which means three defensive linemen, four linebackers, and four defensive backs. The initial set up indicates a run, which is what the play-action was for. The Bills reveal themselves to be in a mixed defense, which means they're using both man and zone defenses. Notice the cornerbacks appear to be in man, but the inside linebackers appear to be in zones. The right outside linebacker rushes Simms, but the left outside linebacker moves to cover Chris Ivory out of the backfield.

In any case, Simms drops back, immediately recognizes that his quick primary read isn't open, and resets. Notice the pocket is clean, and there isn't any real pressure on Simms. Simms delivers a well-placed ball right on Jeff Cumberland's numbers, between the two defenders. Cumberland waltzes into the end zone, and the Jets finally score another touchdown to only be down 34-14.

Let's watch some plays.

In the second part of this week's GIF series between the New York Jets and the Buffalo Bills, let's watch one of Ed Reed's plays.

Second quarter, 12:48 remaining. The Bills are lined up in 12 personnel, which means one running back and two tight ends, leaving two wide receivers. The Jets are lined up in their 4-3 defense, which means four defensive linemen, three linebackers, and four defensive backs. The play is designed to look like a run to the left, which would have two tight ends and a wide receiver blocking for the running back. In this case, the offense tried some trickery with E.J. Manuel tossing the ball to T.J. Graham on the end-around, instead of handing the ball off.

Before Graham even gets the ball, Reed has already recognized the play and comes flying in along the hashes from the deep safety spot. Quinton Coples is tasked with containing the play, and he does so by getting his hands on Scott Chandler, the tight end. He quickly releases and falls back to cover him should he go out for a pass. Coples' quick press on Chandler is enough to let Reed get by before Chandler can block Reed out of the picture. So what we have here are three good things. The first is that Reed can still recognize plays like nobody's business and has one of the best football minds in the game. The second is that he still has his straight line speed as he's able to close extremely quickly (this GIF is actually slowed down a bit, for clarity). And the third is that Coples does his job by holding contain and giving Reed a free run.

Let's watch some plays.

In this GIF Breakdown, we're going to be trying things differently. We will have one GIF per day for the next few days. I will attempt to convey more X's and O's information on the play so we can become more intimate with the chosen plays.

Although the New York Jets were beaten down by the Buffalo Bills, there were some good plays that came out of it. This series will highlight those few good plays.

First quarter, 8:23 remaining. Geno Smith is lined up in the shotgun with Bilal Powell to his left. The team is in 11 personnel, which means there's one running back and one tight end. That leaves three receivers. The Bills appear to be in a standard 3-4 defense with four down linemen, three linebackers, and four defensive backs. After the snap, Smith rolls right and gives a quick pump fake, presumably to freeze the free safety. The line is actually holding up and doesn't really give up any pressure, which was fairly rare in this game; to say the unit underperformed is an understatement. It is rare and usually unadvisable for quarterbacks to throw across their body to the opposite side of the field, especially deep, which leads me to conclude that the play was designed to go to one of the two receivers on the right side, and Smith immediately recognizes they aren't open. So Smith immediately finds Santonio Holmes on the opposite side.

Holmes is running a "sluggo" route, which is a slant and go up the right sideline. He's actually held and the defense could have been flagged for defensive holding, but he seems to be doing it as well, so the referees let the penalty slide. It's unclear if the ball is actually put where Smith intended, because of the gusting winds (four plays later, Nick Folk would miss his first field goal of the year). In any case, the ball ends up where only Holmes can get the ball, and he adjusts beautifully. If the ball is thrown farther down the field, it may actually be picked off by the closing free safety (out of the frame), or more probably, thrown out of bounds. So the ball ends up in a perfect location and the Jets have a huge gain. In considering the wind, I think this play recognizes two things. The first is that Smith moved off the primary read to his secondary read, and that he had the arm strength to deliver the ball across the field in a perfect spot despite gusting winds. That displays enormous arm strength that, frankly, many quarterbacks just don't have.

Let's relive the glory days!

Hey folks! This was, again, one of those weeks where if I could, I'd GIF the entire game, glue it to my eyeballs, and be happy if that was the only thing I ever watched again. In any case, here are four plays, two offense, two defense, that summarized the game.

First of all, notice that Damon Harrison forces Drew Brees to step up. Why? Because he is a grown man. Other than that, this is your standard base defense. At one point, Dawan Landry has his hands on the receiver's back, but he never pushes him, never wraps his arm around him, and just gets between the receiver and the ball. Heads up play by Demario Davis to locate the ball.

There are a few things noteworthy on this play. First of all, Tommy Bohanon stood his dude straight up. Second of all, Chris Ivory runs like every step is the most important step in his life, and he keeps those legs churning. Third of all, Stephen Hill is a phenomenal blocker. This play doesn't happen if it's Chaz Schilens blocking there.

At this point, my friend Tom started shouting, "WHO THE HECK IS GREG SALAS?," over and over. This is probably the best play that Brian Winters had all game. But most importantly, watch Geno Smith audible into the perfect hot route to beat the blitz. That is what we need to see from him, and he's gotten better and better at it each week.
