The NFL Wild Card Weekend games continue tonight with a game between two teams that switched quarterbacks a few years ago. Matthew Stafford was the starting quarterback for the Detroit Lions for many years before he was traded to the Los Angeles Rams for Jared Goff and draft picks. Tonight Stafford and Goff face each other in Detroit with a trip to the Divisional Round on the line. Kickoff is scheduled for 8:15 pm EST.
The 10-7 Los Angeles Rams come into this game as hot as any team in the NFL. They won seven of their final eight games. Their only loss in that stretch came in overtime against perhaps the best team in the NFL, the Baltimore Ravens. The Rams have an excellent passing attack and a great running attack. The offense has put up 26 or more points in six of their last seven games. The Rams’ defense, however, has struggled, especially against the pass, ranking in the bottom third of the league.
The 12-5 Detroit Lions come into this game struggling a bit, having dropped three of their last seven games. Like the Rams, the Lions excel on offense both in the running game and in the passing game. Overall, the Lions offense ranks 2nd in the NFL in passing yards, 5th in running yards and 3rd in total yards. On defense it’s a different story. While the Lions have an excellent run defense, their pass defense ranks 27th in the NFL, and their overall defense ranks 19th.
This game looks like it’s set up for offensive fireworks, at least on paper. These are two prolific offenses facing two underwhelming defenses. This could be a shootout in Detroit. I expect a tight game with plenty of offense. In the end, I’m taking the home team Lions to prevail.
