The Chiefs and the Dolphins clash in frigid Kansas City

The NFL Wild Card Weekend games continue tonight with a game carried exclusively by the Peacock streaming service. The Kansas City Chiefs host the Miami Dolphins in a dangerously frigid Kansas City, where wind chills are expected to be as much as -30 degrees. Kickoff is scheduled for 8:15 pm EST.

The 11-6 Miami Dolphins come into this game having blown a substantial late season lead to cede the AFC East crown to the Buffalo Bills on the last day of the regular season. The high-flying Dolphins offense has turned tepid of late, failing to score more than 22 points in each of the last three games. The Dolphins have been something of a schoolyard bully this season, beating up on the weaklings of the NFL while going 1-5 against winning teams. Now they face a good Chiefs team that beat the Dolphins earlier this season.

The 11-6 Kansas City Chiefs come into this game having stumbled in the last half of the season. After opening this season with a 7-2 record, the Chiefs went just 4-4 over the last half of the season. This Chiefs team is very different from recent iterations. They are carried by the league’s 2nd ranked defense, while the once explosive offense has looked pedestrian much of the year. Travis Kelce has finally begun to look his age, and other than outstanding rookie receiver Rashee Rice, Patrick Mahomes has had few good options to pick up the slack.

The Dolphins have historically struggled badly in cold weather, and their prolific passing attack may have some trouble in tonight’s frigid conditions. The Dolphins also have had all kinds of trouble against the better teams in the NFL. While the Chiefs are a flawed team that may not go far this post-season, I’m taking them to win at home against an over-rated Dolphins team.
