I want Carson Wentz OVER Aaron Rodgers

Nah. Not really, I just did that for shock value. But realistically, I do think there is a case to be made for Carson Wentz to be QB1, the primary signal caller, the bridge QB, the underdog with gas in the tank. I'll lay it out for you below.

Aaron Rodgers has held out the trade/retirement branch for the past 3 seasons including this one. I don't see the value in the Jets trading draft capital, and getting a one year stop gap for that draft capital. However prolific Aaron Rodgers has been, he is still a stop gap quarterback. And based on history, do you want to be in March/April 2024 talking about Aaron Rodger retirement plans again? Seems like a waste of time to me.

Carson Wentz is very similar to Derek Carr. Most of you are going to sigh, moan, complain, and say I don't know what I'm talking about before even doing any research. Besides the fact that Wentz and Carr are both almost a decade younger than Aaron Rodgers let's look at their per game stats, courtesy of Stathead.

Passing (per Game) Rushing (Per game)

Rk Player From To Cmp Att Yds TD Int Sk Yds Att Yds TD

1 Derek Carr 2014 2022 22.5 34.9 248.0 1.5 0.7 1.9 11.4 2.0 6.0 0.0

2 Carson Wentz 2016 2022 22.1 35.3 237.9 1.6 0.7 2.5 16.3 3.6 14.6 0.1

Carson Wentz has played 7 seasons in the NFL. 4 of those 7 seasons, he has posted 3 to 1 TD to INT ratio. Twice he has posted 4 to 1 TD to INT ratio. For comparison, there is no Jets QB has who has done that including the Fitzpatrick year when he threw for 30 TD's.

Wentz costs no draft capital and is a 30 year old free agent who for some reason is being pitched as a QB on his last chance. In reality, he had one bad season in Washington where he broke his finger. The season prior in Indy he threw for 3,500 yards with 27 TD's against only 7 interceptions. When was the last time a Jets QB played a full season and threw only 7 interceptions?

I'm not hating on Aaron Rodgers, but I don't like his theatrics. I for one think that Woody Johnson is driving the bus and wants a QB with a "Name" that fans will applaud as opposed to a productive QB that will help us win. If we get Rodgers via trade, I'll be the first one to admit he is a better QB than Carson Wentz. But having said that, I still think Joe Douglas should do what he's been doing which is to build the team through the draft. Don't reach for players. Don't reach for guys past their prime, or guys that are too expensive for name recognition. Get guys that are productive and work within the team building concept. To me that is Carson Wentz, an underdog QB for an underdog team who can get this team into the playoffs and beyond.
