The first half saw the Commanders collapse under an avalanche of ineptitude as the Jets took a commanding 27 - 7 lead into the locker room. The Jets defense was dominant, Breece Hall and Garrett Wilson were making big plays, and the end result was an unfamiliar situation in which the Jets had a nearly insurmountable lead at halftime. We haven’t seen this all year.
The Jets opened the 3rd quarter on offense. Neither team did much until midway through the quarter, when Quincy Williams intercepted a Sam Howell pass and the Jets had the ball deep in Commanders’ territory. Just when the Jets looked like they were going to put the final nail in the Commanders’ coffin, Trevor Siemian threw an interception, the Commanders returned the ball 56 yards into Jets territory, and the Commanders had a spark of hope.
At this point the Commanders made a change at quarterback, bringing in Jacoby Brissett in relief of Sam Howell. A few plays later Brissett had the Commanders in the end zone and suddenly we had a football game with the score Jets 27, Commanders 14 as the third quarter wound down.
The Jets went nowhere on their next drive and the Commanders then drove the length of the field for a touchdown. The Jets lead was cut to just six points with more than nine minutes to play as the momentum shifted to the Commanders.
Four minutes later the Commanders finished off another drive with a touchdown run and took a one point lead at 28 - 27 with less than five minutes to play. It was a stunning and humiliating turnaround, with the Jets vaunted defense unable to stop a mediocre Commanders offense.
The Jets went nowhere on their next possession and punted. After the Commanders went three and out the Jets got one final chance to salvage what should have been an easy win.
Trevor Siemian drove the Jets just far enough for Greg Zuerlein to kick a game winning 54 yard field goal with five seconds left on the clock.
With the win the Jets bring their record to 6-9 on the season. Now the Jets prepare to go on the road to face the Cleveland Browns in the last Thursday Night Football game of the season.
