It’s time for some Saturday NFL football

Week 16 of the 2023 NFL season takes center stage with a couple of Saturday games.

At 4:30 pm EST we have the 8-6 Cincinnati Bengals visiting the 7-7 Pittsburgh Steelers in a game both teams need badly for their playoff hopes. This will be a matchup of backup quarterbacks, as Jake Browning tries to continue his magical run for the Bengals in relief of the injured Joe Burrow, while third string quarterback Mason Rudolph gets his first start for the Steelers since 2021.

At 8:00 pm EST, the 5-9 Los Angeles Chargers host the 8-6 Buffalo Bills. The Chargers are playing out the string of another disappointing season. They got blown out by the Las Vegas Raiders last week. They have lost five of their last six contests. The Chargers have lost star quarterback Justin Herbert for the season, leaving career backup Easton Stick to pick up the pieces and make the most of his opportunity to start in a lost season.

The Bills come into this game off two consecutive big wins over the Kansas City Chiefs and the Dallas Cowboys. Those victories have put the Bills in position to possibly overtake the Miami Dolphins and win another AFC East title if the Bills can win their final three games. The Dolphins have a brutal final three games, and if they lose two of their final three games, including the last game of the season against the Bills, and the Bills win out, the Bills will take the division. The Bills historically have had plenty of trouble against the Chargers, but this game looks like a mismatch in favor of the Bills on paper.

These Saturday games have major playoff implications. Good stuff in a dreary season for the Jets.
