Has the Fat Lady sung? What are the New York Jets playoff odds after loss to the Buffalo Bills?

Do the Jets still have playoff hopes?

No reason to beat around the bush on this one: The New York Jets got dominated from the first snap until the last against the Buffalo Bills.

Following this loss, the Jets now sit at 4-6, which is a tough spot to be in when you can typically only have 7 losses if you want to make the playoffs. In line with that, the New York Times currently has the Jets at a 4% chance of making the playoffs. To put it succinctly, “that’s not great.”

But has the proverbial Fat Lady sung? Is the season over? Well, technically no. 4% is still a chance. Stranger things have happened. Just this season the Jets won a game when they had a 2% chance of victory.

It’s possible. Definitely not likely, but possible. While the Fat Lady might not be singing yet, she’s certainly taking the stage and she’s ready to belt out the song to end all songs (at least songs about the Jets making the playoffs).

So how do the Jets get her off the stage before that first note? Well, according to the New York Times, they basically have to win out.

That begins this Sunday where a loss to the Dolphins would take them under a 1% chance of making the playoffs. If they can beat the Dolphins in this game and then again on December 17th then their odds of making the playoffs jumps to 17%. That’s not bad.

Lose either game to the Dolphins though? Well, the Jets odds then become more like 2%, which is just about dead in the water.

Outside of those Dolphins games? Well, they’ll need to win basically every game. Maybe they can afford a loss. For example. Beating the Dolphins twice but losing to the Falcons would give the Jets a 13% chance of making the playoffs. Lose any other game? Right around 4%. Lose any other game on top of that? Under 1%.

So, the Fat Lady might be on the way to the stage, but she hasn’t sung yet. While it’s unlikely the Jets can keep her at bay, there’s still a chance. And, hey, a chance is something.
