AGOP: Monsters of MetLife

What’s up Gang Green Gangsters? For the first time since 2019 you’ll get a GT7 AGOP that doesn’t feature Sam Darnold and I think we can all breathe easy. The Jets are set up perfectly to capitalize on the 2022 draft and free agency. We have a lot of premium draft picks and are sitting with a comfortable $48.5 mil in cap space before any cuts are made. So without further ado here is how I’d fix the Jets and make them a 2022 playoff team.

My philosophy for this mock is to add truly elite talent where I can, and add guys with a lot of potential everywhere else. You won’t see many big name signings, or overpaying based off the market. I take a lot of pride in building through the draft, so that’s where a majority of my premium talent will hopefully come from. I used a combination of Overthecap and Sporttrac to determine free agents and their rough fair market values. For the draft I used several combinations of mock draft and big boards to try and accurately pick where players might go.

Cuts (Cap Savings):

Greg Van Roten ($3.5 mil)- Just a really bad guard.

Sheldon Rankins ($5.4 mil)- a solid gamble on a reclamation project, but hasn’t panned out.

Ryan Griffin ($3 mil)- it’s about three years past time to move on.

Justin Hardee ($2 mil)- just not really sure what he brings to the table at this point.

New Cap Space: $62.4 mil

Trades: (Cap Savings or Hit)

George Fant to The Chargers for pick 79 ($10 mil)

Pick 10 to Pittsburgh for pick 20, 52, 138 and a 2023 2nd(I think we get more than this in real life, but this fits the trade value chart)

Resignings (cap hit):

Eddy Pinero, K- 1 year,$1.5 mil- He can kick through the big yellow poles better than anyone we’ve had in a while.

Laurent Tardif-Duvenernay, G, 2 years, $6 mil ($3 mil)- Solid depth piece plus could potential start if we have a struggling rookie.

Dan Feeny, C/G 1 year, $2.5 mil ($2.5 mil)- who doesn’t love a beer chugging, mullet rocking, center who casually earns a 90 PFF grade in spot starts?

Mike White, QB, 2nd Round Tender ($3.9mil)

New Cap Space: $63

Free Agent Signings (Cap Hit):

JC Jackson, CB 5 years, $105 mil ($18 mil)- Jackson is a turnover machine and a true cover corner. In my opinion he’s the best in the business. He allows the Jets to do so many things on defense.

Jayron Kearse, S 3 years, $17 mil ($6 mil)- Kearse enjoyed a pretty good breakout season in 2021, and seems to be on an upward trajectory. He plays a SS role, and is athletic enough to move all over the field.

Tashaun Gipson, FS, 3 years $10 mil ($3 mil)- Gipson is a solid free safety to does generate some turnovers. Frankly we need a lot of help at this position.

Devondre Campbell, OLB, 4 years, $32 mil ($8 mil)- The Jets need better linebacker player. Campbell is a true OLB and an all pro.

Tarik Cohen, RB/KR, 2 years, $4 mil ($2 mil)- this kid is electric in all aspects of the run/pass/return game.

Zach Ertz, TE, 3 years, $22 mil ($7mil)- Zach Wilson needs a reliable tight end. Ertz maybe be aging, but he’s as solid as they come.

Mo Allie Cox, TE, 2 years, $4 mil ($2 mil)- One of the best blocking tight ends in the game. Also is a huge upgrade over Wesco as a tight end 2.

Will Fuller, WR, 1 year, $5 mil ($5 mil)- I’m not a huge fan of this free agent market for WR. I think there are a lot of WR2 that are about to get a big payday. So I’ll take Fuller on a prove it deal, who’s shown to be a very good deep threat, with high end potential.

Cap Space: $14 mil

NFL Draft:

4) Evan Neal, OT- Ultimately I think the Jags snag Ekwonu to protect Lawrence.I think Hutchinson and Hamilton are off the board. Leaving the Jets to take the best Tackle in the draft. Neal is an incredibly clean prospect and gives the Jets two young book end Tackles.

20) Jermaine Johnson, DE- to me Johnson is a huge wildcard in this draft. Ultimately I think he’s the odd man out after the combine warriors, which helps the Jets add a premium talent to a defensive line, where he doesn’t have to be the star right away.

35) Christian Watson, WR- speed, size, great hands, good route running. Watson is everything you want in a receiver. He will take a little time to develop, but this kid has tremendous potential.

38) Kenyon Green, OG- a true mauler that is surprisingly quick footed. I think he fits here perfectly.

52) Jaquan Brisker, FS- The Jets continue to rebuild this secondary with a really excellent cover Safety with amazing range and instincts.

69) Remeo Doubs, WR- I think it would be really wise to continue adding pass catchers. Doubs is a great after the catch WR with dynamic playmaking ability.

79) Leo Chanel, LB- Chanel is a big time standout at Wisconsin, and is all over the field. Great instincts and a good enough athlete. Let this kid rotate for a year, and we may have our MLB for the next decade.

110) Marcus Jones, CB- my favorite late round prospect in the draft. This kid is fast, he’s instinctive and has confidence to fill up a room. He’s only 5’8" but this kid plays like a giant.

116) Isiah Likely, TE- Likely isn’t really a true TE, but he’s a guy you can move all over the place. He lines up inside, outside and the H back. I see him being a useful piece in Lafluer’s offense.

138) Chris Hinton, DT- The jets add a rotational with some upside. He’s raw but extremely athletic

146) D’Vonte Price, RB- Price is a bigger power back that will compliment Carter very well. For being a bigger back he has some very good break away spleen once he hits the second level.

163) Kaleb Eleby, QB- The Jets need to add a young backup QB that can be developed. Eleby is the guy who I think could do well in this offense. He’s athletic enough, he’s smart enough, and he’s a good enough passer. He sort of reminds me of Josh Johnson.
