The Jets 0-3 start has caused many fans to give up on the entire Jets organization. In the 3 years since Douglas arrived the Jets have been arguably the worst team in football. completely theWilson, Lafleur, and Douglas. It’s been a dismal start as Wilson leads the NFL in interceptions with 7 interceptions and the Jets are the leagues’ worst offense ranking last in points, 29th in total yards and passing yards. Things are ugly. Coach Saleh spoke about facing adversity before the season and that’s all the Jets have faced so far. The Jets have lost Carl Lawson, Vinny Curry, Mekhi Becton, Jarrad Davis, Lamarcus Joyner, and Ashtyn Davis to injury. Their 1st 3 games were against top 10 defenses led by veteran coordinators. Not to mention the death of assistant head coach Greg Knapp. Very few teams have had to face anything close to what the Jets have this season.
However, it is far too soon to give up on this team. We were expecting it to be an ugly start to the season even if we’re under-performing. The Jets are the youngest team in the NFL and are led by a rookie QB, HC, OC with 13 new starters including 7 on offense. The Jets rookies have played at a high level with AVT, Wilson, Carter II ranking 1st, 2nd, and 4th at their positions among rookies. Carter and Moore are improving every week.
The quality of the defense the Jets played is very understated. The teams currently rank 1st, 2nd, and 5th in yards per game; 1st, 2nd, and 3rd in passing yards per game; and 1st, 2nd, and 6th in points per game. Outside of the Broncos game the Jets have outperformed other teams in terms of yards but turnovers have limited our scoring. I still have faith in this Jets team and the players and staff that Douglas has assembled. Don’t give up on them in week 3.
But since many teams have given up on the season I will talk about the future. The Jets continue their slow start against the Titans dropping to 0-4 despite an 20+ point game by the Jets offense. The Jets start to hit their stride after the bye with the return of Mekhi Becton, Jarrad Davis, and Ashtyn Davis and elevate their groups. Jarrad and Ashtyn have been especially missed as their replacements have been complete liabilities. Weeks 9-16 Jets go 5-3 and finish the season 6-9 and have the 9th, 21st pick, 37th, and 45th pick along with a 3rd, 3 4ths, 2 5ths, 3 6ths, and a 7th. This past year Douglas found 4 week 2 starters in the 4th – 6th round and 7 overall. Now he’ll have 14 picks to do it again. Jets will be able to get top players at Edge, Cornerback, Safety, Tight End, Center and Guard. It’s difficult to project but in this years draft that would’ve been Patrick Surtain, Jamin Davis, Odafe Oweh, Jevon Holland, and Pat Feirmuth. Think about what how different the team would be with these players.
Armed with plenty of cap and an exciting free agent class Douglas will have the opportunity to plug holes and add much needed depth. Douglas resigns key starters in John Franklin-Myers, Foley Fatukasi, Braxton Berrios, Morgan Moses and Tyler Kroft. He follows that up by suring up the offensive line with the signing of Connor McGovern and Billy Price. The Jets also pursue help at linebacker and WR signing Jayon Brown/Leighton Vander Esch and Michael Gallup/Juju Smith. At corner the Jets sign Charvarius Ward and to compete for CB2. After filling the Jets biggest needs Douglas signs cheap athletic depth and shifts his eyes to the draft.
This years class is littered with high end pass rushers and corners which will help push the Jets defense over the top. With their 1st 2 picks the Jets target Corner and defensive end, I like to think Andrew Booth Jr and Kingsley Enagbare. In the 2nd round they snag the best tight end in the draft to give Wilson a security blanket selecting Jalen WyderMyer who is a day 1 starter. Through round 4 the Jets add players at linebacker, guard, and safety before adding depth along the line and secondary at the end of day 3.
I don’t know what Douglas will do but I do believe this team is moving in the right direction. I’m 2 years Douglas has added several impact players through the draft. In year 1 he added stars in Becton and Hall along with Mims, Huff, and Davis. Year 2 a majority of the class is already starting and playing at a respectable level. Give the youngest team in the NFL with 13 new starters led by a bunch of rookies and a new staff some time.
