Marcus Maye to Miss 3-4 Weeks With Ankle Injury

NFL: New York Jets Training Camp NorthJersey.com-USA TODAY NETWORK

Jets starting safety Marcus Maye will be out three to four weeks due to an ankle injury according to NFL insider Ian Rapoport.

This is a big hit to the Jets secondary. Maye is the reigning team MVP and has been a consistent performer throughout his five year career. He was off to a strong start in 2021, and his presence has helped stabilize a young secondary.

This leaves the Jets without both of their starting safeties. Lamarcus Joyner was lost for the season after suffering an injury in the first half of the opener against Carolina.

The Jets did designate a pair of safeties on injured reserve to return to practice on Wednesday. They are Ashtyn Davis and Sharrod Neasman. Davis in particular figures to have a lot on his plate once he gets back into the lineup. The 2020 third round pick was slated to be a role player on defense, but these injuries will press him into a key spot on the defense.
