Jets Sign Thomas Morstead

NFL: Los Angeles Rams at New Orleans Saints Chuck Cook-USA TODAY Sports

The Jets are signing veteran punter Thomas Morstead per Tom Pelissero.

The Jets lost their punter Braden Mann for four to six weeks with a knee sprain early in the season opening loss to Carolina. Kicker Matt Ammendola did an admirable job for the rest of the game without any preparation or advance notice, but the Jets need him focused on place kicking. Morstead gets the first opportunity to replace Mann while he is out.

Morstead spent his entire career with the Saints prior to this point. Released in March, he was not with any NFL team in training camp. He was a fifth round pick in 2009 and won a Super Bowl ring as a rookie. He was a Pro Bowler and earned a Second Team All Pro selection in 2012. His career average per punt is 46.5 yards, although last year he produced the lowest average of his career at 43.1 yards. Morstead played in college at SMU.
