Good morning, Gang Green Nation! The New York Jets appear to be content with rolling with the young cornerbacks and the young backup quarterbacks, at least for the time being. What this says about the Jets, among other things, is that they are in full rebuild mode. No team expecting to contend for the playoffs would go into the season with Captain Morgan and Mike White as the backup quarterbacks, nor would any contending team head into the season with a collection of low round draft picks and undrafted free agents, none of whom have ever produced even average cornerback play for more than half an NFL season. The truth is, this is a team even the Jets brass are not expecting to contend quite yet. And that’s OK. For ten years the Jets refused to face the stark reality of an ever diminishing talent level, patched up with mediocre veteran free agent signings. That approach was doomed to fail. Finally the Jets are getting serious about a full tear it down to the foundations and rebuild with young players approach. That will inevitably lead to growing pains, but it’s the best way back from the abyss. 2021 will likely be another tough year for the team, but by next year, with another bunch of premium draft picks and some judicious free agent signings, we should begin to see the emergence of a contender. If we don’t see major progress by 2022, we should begin to question the long term viability of Joe Douglas as Jets GM.
