AGOP: A Path Foward

First time trying one of these, let me know what you think

Cuts

I cut 23 people using OTC, mostly training camp players. The notable names are:

Crowder – Cost cutting move, there’s a lot of slot talent in the draft that can take his spot

Lewis and Van Roten – Need upgrades at guard

Ryan Griffin

Sam Ficken

Trade Sam Darnold to Redskins for #51

After the cuts and trade we’re left with $105mm in cap space

Resign

Josh Adams – 1 year, $1 million

Terrel Basham – 2 years, $4 million

Neville Hewitt – 2 years, $5 million

Brian Poole – 2 years, $13 million

Free Agency

CJ Beathard – 1 year, $3 million – backup QB that knows the system

Kenny Golladay – 4 years, $80 million – Finally get the WR1 we’ve been needing for years

James O’ Shaughnessy – 2 years, $3 million – TE depth

Ethan Pocic – 1 year, $1.5 million – IOL depth

Joe Thuney – 5 years, $80 million – Get one of the best guards in the league to protect our new QB

Matt Feiler – 2 years, $10 million – Solid OL that can play either T or G

Carl Lawson – 4 years, $50 million – David Wyatt had a good article on this last week. Young talented edge rusher

Richard Sherman – 2 years, $20 million – His love of Salah is very well known, still a starting caliber CB than can be a leader for this young squad

Keanu Neal – 2 years, $10 million – A natural SS to pair with Maye and Davis

Cairo Santos - 3 years, $9 million – Need a reliable kicker

$15mm in cap space left for the draft (I'm sure someone more cap savvy than I am could structure those contracts in a way that gives us additional cap space)

Draft

#2: Zach Wilson – All of these mock offseason hinge on who you want under center, I’m a believer in Wilson as our QB of the future

#23: Alijah Vera-Tucker – Get the best guard in the draft to round out our O Line

#34: Greg Newsome – CB to compete with Hall and Austin for CB2

#51: Jabril Cox – biggest hole I didn't fill in FA, some real good options in the first couple rounds. Cox is a good fit for our defense

#66: Carlos Basham - Another edge rusher (and cousins of Terell Basham

#86: Amari Rodgers - Will take over the slot role from Crowder

#107: Kenneth Gainwell

#146: Pete Werner

#154: Cade Johnson

#185: Ben Mason

QB: Wilson, Beathard, Morgan

RB: Gainwell, Perrine, Adams, Johnson

FB: Mason

WR: Golladay, Mims, Rodgers, Berrios, Johnson, Cager

TE: Herndon, Wesco, O’Shaughnessy

OT: Becton, Fant, Feiler, Edoga

OG: Thuney, Vera-Tucker, Clark

C: McGoverm, Pocic

DE: Lawson, Basham, Basham, Zuniga, Huff

DT: Williams, Franklin-Myers, Fatukasi, Shepherd

LB: Mosley, Cox, Cashman, Hewitt, Warner

CB: Sherman, Newsome, Poole, Hall, Austin, Guidry

S: Maye, Neal, Davis

K: Santos

P: Mann

Analysis: My primary goal was to actually put Wilson in a position to succeed. Getting Thuney and Vera-Tucker at the guard spots are significant upgrades that should actually allow Wilson to have some time in the pocket and create space for our RBs. Golladay is the WR1 we haven't had for year and if Mims continues to improve will make for a great WR pair on the outside for Wilson to work with. I'm sure some would have liked to see an upgrade at TE, I'm still optimistic on Herndon. The defense didn't get the same top tier upgrade as the other side of the ball. However, Lawson should give us the best edge rushing presence we've had in years, and I added a few new pieces to improve the secondary. Don't think there are any glaring holes left on this team, and if some of the young guys step up this could be a very solid team.
