The free agency tampering period is just around the corner, teams can start talking to free agents “officially” at noon EST, and the Jets are expected to be busy.
This morning on Good Morning Football, NFL analyst Tom Pelissero was recapping the Aaron Jones deal which saw the running back return to Green Bay, which almost certainly means that Jamaal Williams will be playing his football somewhere else, and he hinted that the Jets could be very interested in making that place New York.
I didn’t expect the Jets to attempt to go after someone like Aaron Jones, but Jamaal Williams makes a lot of sense. For one he’s going to be significantly cheaper, but also he fits the offensive scheme the Jets will be looking to run with LaFleur.
Williams is a good rusher having rushed for 4.2 yards per carry last year and he also brought in 31 of 35 passes as part of a committee approach in Green Bay. He averaged 2.66 yards after contact and forced 12 missed tackles as well. He has been a complementary back to Jones and as such he doesn’t have a lot of wear and tear on the tyres and at 25 his best years are still ahead of him.
The Jets are lacking in experience at the RB position with Ty Johnson and La’Mical Perine the only signed players for 2021, Josh Adams is currently a restricted free agent.
I think it all comes down to cost. What are the Jets comfortable giving to a RB in free agency. PFF have Williams receiving a 2 year $6 million contract with $4 million guaranteed. If you can get him for that, it’s a no-brainer for my money. However, I think he’ll get a little more.
Williams is definitely an interesting name to watch with the Jets, there will be plenty of carries to go around next year, but if he were to sign he’d certainly vault to the top of the depth chart at running back.
