New York Jets Flight Connections 2/27/21

Good morning, Gang Green Nation! The period in which NFL teams can designate a player with the franchise tag or transition tag began last Tuesday, and the final deadline for tagging players is March 9. The only player that makes much sense for the Jets to tag is safety Marcus Maye. The Jets have stated they will make signing Maye a priority this offseason, but if negotiations aren’t going well, tagging Maye makes a lot of sense. The franchise tag for Maye would be approximately $11.2 million for 2021. With Maye being a somewhat older free agent (he turns 28 years old the day of the tag deadline, March 9), tagging him would prevent the Jets from committing long term cap space to Maye while keeping his cap hit in a reasonable range for a player of his ability. Unless Maye signs a team friendly deal, tagging him is probably the way I would go if I were Joe Douglas. We’ll soon see how this plays out.
