On hiring Robert Saleh:

One of the things to consider with all of the candidates is who their current and former colleagues are. One of the reasons I like Saleh is that he might bring Mike LaFleur with him from SF as his OC. I’m not ready to give up on Darnold and I think he might improve significantly in Shanahan’s Offense.

Saleh Set to meet ownership

Here’s my metaphor: You don’t introduce your girlfriend to your parents unless she has some sort of meaning to you. Meet your new Jets Head Coach

I am hoping this is basically a done deal now for you guys, he’s a great coach and you guys will fall in love with his high energy on the sidelines and his great interviews for the media he tries to explain stuff in his own way. We’ll be sad to lose him from the 9ers, hopefully this is the coach to turn things around for you, and the OC you are getting from the 9ers staff is amazing as well, expect a great offense as well. If this is almost final the Jets org made a great decision unlike the Lions who let Saleh walk. good luck Jets fans

Robert Saleh will be the Breakout coach of 2021. I think we’ll finally have ourselves a real HC that can combine leadership, being a player’s coach, attention to detail, attention to all 3 phases and someone who can build a program. Have a good feeling.

I just shaved my head in support of Douglas and Saleh.

On the interview process:

I’d love to be a fly on the wall during these interviews if only to hear how they are discussing Sam. Really from both sides, how the team views him and how the prospective coach views him from the outside. If it were up to me I’d still draft a qb, but the trade back also pretty appealing for me. We could get SO many picks. I’d probably trade back from 23 too.

Take your four best candidates. Divide into twos. Take the first two, have them choose up sides from your 90 man roster and all the coaches still under contract, then play each other. Because QB is too important, have both sides use the same QB. Take the next two, do the same. Have the two winning candidates repeat the process against each other. The winning candidate gets the job. In one fell swoop you get to see how they can optimize performance of the current roster, coach a less than ideal talent pool, evaluate talent, design game plans around the talent available, communicate with players, evaluate staff, make crucial in game decisions under pressure. The ultimate HC job interviews. Obviously not the least bit doable, but how cool would that be?

On whether coverage or pass rush is more important:

Pass Rush vs Coverage

Some comments below that you have to fix the Pass Rush first, and then the coverage takes care of itself. I ain’t buying that. In fact, if anything, I’d say its more the other way around. The Jets coverage has been so damned soft lately. So many plays against the Jets are less than 2 second one read jobs. Thats just the way the NFL is now. On the majority of plays, the best Pass Rush in the world is not going to get there in time with these CBs and LBs in Cover. Priority no. 1 on D is Coverage Personnel. I’m not saying Edge Rush is not a priority - it is. Just not the first priority.

On DeShaun Watson:

If Deshaun really gets to the point where his mind is made up that he wants NY, he can facilitate it in a number of ways: 1) Publicly announce that he refuses to play for the Texans ever again 2) Doing #1 will tank the asking price the Texans can command in return 3) Then tell the Texans he’ll only waive his no-trade clause to go to the Jets What could the Texans realistically do, call Deshaun’s bluff, refuse to trade him, then draft some scrub QB with their 3rd round pick to start week 1? The fan base already despises ownership, Easterby, and the new GM who is supposedly super close with Easterby. NRG stadium or whatever they call it would be empty on Sundays. The #2 overall pick would guarantee the Texans Justin Fields, something they could at least try to sell their fanbase on, a young high-level QB prospect who comes with cost certainty for 5 years.

The Jets offer this year’s #2 overall pick, a 1st round pick next season (whichever is higher — ours or Seattle’s) and a first round pick in ‘23. The only year we’re left w/o a 1st rounder is ‘23. Would that not be enough?
