There’s not much to say about the Jets performance against the 49ers this week. It was pathetic. The Jets were dominated in every phase of the game. If that sounds familiar, it’s because I literally copy/pasted it from last week’s article and the opposing team’s name is the only thing I needed to change. I may just leave it in the clipboard because after just two games, it sure feels like I can get a lot of use out of it this year. Stickers must go out, however, so here we go:
Bronze Star: Sam Ficken (2/2 field goals, 1/1 extra points)
Honestly, I’ve got nothing. Maybe giving the kicker stars when no one else comes to play is just a tradition at this point. The offense and defense were a completely abhorrent with the exception of the following two players, and every other player that I saw do something positive had at least one total meltdown as well. Ficken hit all three of his kicks. One was even from 41 yards out!
Silver Star: Mekhi Becton
Another solid performance from the rookie bodes well for Joe Douglas and the future of the Jets. Becton is a giant, but he showed good technique and great quickness in this game against one of the best lines in football (for a few minutes anyway.) Great to see the young LT exceeding expectations for a rookie lineman, making him one of the only bright spots to a horrendous start to the season for the Jets.
Gold Star: Quinnen Williams (7 tackles, 2 sacks, 1 FF)
Probably the biggest positive of the game was finally noticing some development from Quinnen Williams, who exploded off the line early in the game, tallying multiple sacks and tackles for a loss. After a slightly disappointing rookie season and an unimpressive season opener, Williams looked every bit the #3 overall pick that Jets fans were hoping for in this game. Let’s hope we see a lot more of this.
So there you have it, two weeks in and the table stands:
Quinnen Williams 3 points (1 gold)
Marcus Maye 3 points (1 gold)
Mekhi Becton 2 points (1 silver)
Jamison Crowder 2 points (1 silver)
Sam Ficken 1 point (1 bronze)
Bless Austin 1 point (1 bronze)
