In the Jets’ 2020 home opener, on a bright and sunny September afternoon in East Rutherford, New Jersey, the New York Jets were dominated by the San Francisco 49ers, 31 - 13.
An 80 yard touchdown run by Raheem Mostert on the first play of the game set the tone for the shellacking the Jets took today. With the Jets running an offense with three practice squad level receivers it was never going to be easy. The Jets tried a ball control, ultra-conservative approach. It didn’t work.
The 49ers beat the Jets in every aspect of this game. They worked with backups at running back, receiver, tight end and quarterback, and still the 49ers put up 31 points against a listless Jets defense. The Jets offense also showed next to nothing, with the ground game mostly bottled up and the passing game limited to short, safe throws which did little damage. This was a total mismatch, with the Jets barely showing up today against a 49ers team so banged up that the Jets should have had a chance. If you’re looking for a silver lining, Quinnen Williams had a big day for the Jets with two sacks.
With the loss the Jets bring their record to 0 - 2 on the year, and already the team’s playoff hopes appear to be a bridge too far. This is quickly shaping up to be another in a long line of lost years for the moribund Jets franchise.
