Over the weekend it was announced the Jets would be signing veteran wide receiver Donte Moncrief. To make room for him as he officially signs, the team has announced the release of kicker Brett Maher.

Maher had been competing with incumbent Sam Ficken for the placekicker job. Ficken’s 2019 season was up and down. Maher came with a big leg. You might remember him making a 62 yard field goal for Dallas last year shortly before halftime in the Jets’ game against the Cowboys. He, however, has shown accuracy issues during his career.
That makes Ficken the only kicker on the roster for now. Whether he will be the Week 1 kicker for the Jets remains to be seen. A lot of kickers are going to be cut over the next week. Some of them are quality players. It wouldn’t surprise me if the Jets’ opening day kicker isn’t on the roster.
