The New York Jets have signed former University of Florida running back La’Mical Perine. Perine was selected by the Jets with the 120th overall pick in the fourth round of the 2020 NFL draft. Perine’s deal is for 4 years and roughly $4 million, about $800,000 of which will count against the salary cap in 2020. Perine becomes the fourth of nine 2020 draft picks signed by the Jets.
Perine, a 22 year old, 5’11”, 216 pound running back, became a starter as a sophomore at Florida in 2017 and led a backfield committee with 562 rushing yards and nine touchdowns. In 2018 he upped those numbers to 826 rushing yards and eight touchdowns. Last year in a slightly disappointing senior year, Perine amassed 676 rushing yards, 40 catches for 262 yards and 11 touchdowns.
La’Mical Perine figures to start out 3rd on the Jets running back depth chart, with a chance to become the primary backup to Le’Veon Bell if the uber-experienced Frank Gore falters or if Perine surprises to the upside. Perine is a back with good pass catching and pass protection skills which should serve him well if and when his number is called in the Jets offense.
