New York Jets Flight Connections 7/25/20

Good morning, GGN! Five years ago, give or take a few weeks, the Jets’ starting quarterback had his jaw broken by his own teammate when backup linebacker IK Enemkpali punched Geno Smith in the face over a disputed $600 Enemkpali believed Smith owed him. It was a shocking incident that just seemed so Jetsian. A new general manager had been brought in to clean up the old one’s mess, a bunch of new players seemingly had the Jets on a better trajectory, and then the starting quarterback gets knocked out for half the season by his own teammate over a petty dispute involving relatively small sums of money for NFL players. The football deities once again were messing with the Jets as a promising new beginning was derailed before it started. And then we saw the best brand of football the Jets had produced since 2010. Sure, the season ended in heartbreak, with a Jets loss in the final game of the season that kept them out of the playoffs. But man, looking back on it now, that season was fun. That season the Jets offense was as explosive as it’s been in a long time. Jets fans had something to look forward to every Sunday of the season, right up until the final minutes of the final game.

The point, if there is one, may be, hey, you never know how things will work out. Sometimes a season that opens with the most Jetsian kind of despair, as things seemingly spiral out of control, develops in surprising ways. And while that 10-6 pleasant surprise in 2015 ended up being the sole highlight of yet another dismal Jets regime, that doesn’t mean this time things can’t develop in a more positive long term direction. So as one Jets first round pick prepares for his date in criminal court on gun charges, and another Jets first round pick desperately tries to tantrum himself out of the Jets organization, and the owner is accused of sexism, racism and corruption, and the head coach is accused of not being capable of leading the Jets to success, and the general manager is accused of being a dishonest, manipulative guy in over his head - man, that’s a lot to digest, even for the Jets - perhaps things will again develop in surprising ways, and what looks like a dumpster fire may turn out to just be the clearing of detritus necessary for a brighter tomorrow.
