In a way too early 2021 mock draft where the New York Jets are projected to have the 3rd pick in the draft, the Jets take the projected best offensive lineman in the draft in offensive tackle Penei Sewell. Of course such things are not to be taken seriously a year ahead of time, but I have to admit it would be pretty cool to take bookend tackles in the first round in back to back years. If that were to happen it would echo the late 1970s, when the Jets took bookend tackles Marvin Powell and Chris Ward in back to back years. Those two tackles anchored a terrific offensive line that set up the Jets for one of their rare prolonged periods of success, as the team made the playoffs four times in six years from 1981 through 1986. There’s no telling how long it will take to rebuild the current Jets offensive line. Not all of the linemen Joe Douglas brings in will be successful. But it sure is nice to finally have somebody committed to building a great offensive line. With perseverance and a bit of good fortune, it doesn’t take too much imagination to project the Jets return to having one of the better offensive lines in the NFL eventually. Douglas will likely not rest until either that is achieved or he is relieved of his duties, whichever comes first. The Jets limited runs of success over the years have almost always coincided with having top offensive lines. A return to focusing on that Jets tradition is such a welcome development for Jets fans weary of being on the outside looking in come the playoffs.
