The Jets agreed to terms with veteran quarterback Joe Flacco on a contract late last week. Flacco is currently recovering from neck surgery. He confirmed on Tuesday a radio interview that he will not be ready to play by the start of the regular season.

Here is a transcription via Rich Cimini:

“I can’t speak to exactly when I’m going to be ready, but it will not be day one,” Flacco said Tuesday in an interview with SiriusXM NFL radio. “Obviously, we’ll get with the doctors and I have another checkup come August, so we’ll see where that goes.”

Cimini has some follow up on the issue:

Flacco, 35, who underwent surgery in early April for a herniated disk, could be cleared for contact in early to mid-September, sources said last week.

The signing of Flacco didn’t seem like a great idea to me last week, and it seems even less so today if the best case scenario for the team’s backup quarterback is possibly being ready for contact early in the regular season.
