The Jets believe they will sign veteran cornerback Logan Ryan to a one year contract per Manish Mehta.

Mehta’s tweet is oddly worded, but we will give him the benefit of the doubt and guess this means a deal is imminent.

Ryan is a veteran defensive back. The Patriots picked him in the third round of the 2013 NFL Draft. He stayed with New England through 2016 when he signed with the Tennessee Titans on a three year contract.

We will have to see the terms of the deal. Presuming his salary is not excessive, it is easy enough to see why the Jets would sign him. The cornerback position for the Jets is a giant question mark, and Ryan is an experienced veteran who provides another option if nothing else. He has versatility having played in the slot and the outside through his career. He flashed playmaking ability in 2019 recording 4 interceptions and 4.5 sacks. Gregg Williams might like utilizing him as a blitzer.

That said, there is typically a reason when a player is available in the middle of May and signs a one year deal. PFF noted that Ryan was one of the corners most frequently burned for big plays in the league in 2019.

This is the kind of signing that generates neither excitement nor anger from me. The Jets have a position of need, and this is a veteran player who plays the position. There are positive signs the player might be able to capably fill it. There are also warning signs he might not be able to capably fill it. As long as the money is not crazy, it’s easy enough to see the thought process behind it.
