The NFL’s “legal tampering” period is scheduled to officially begin today at noon Eastern. This is the first point at which teams can speak with free agents from other teams.
As has frequently been the case in recent years, the Jets figure to be active in free agency. The team is in need of big upgrades at numerous spots on the roster, most notably on the offensive line. Hopefully the Jets will spend smarter with Joe Douglas as general manager than they did with Mike Maccagnan. The Maccagnan era was full of splashy signings that generated hype in the spring but failed once the games actually started. The Jets cannot upgrade their roster without an aggressive approach in free agency, but that aggressiveness needs to be combined with effectiveness.
