The NFL season ends today with Super Bowl LIV. The Kansas City Chiefs take on the San Francisco 49ers in the championship game.
The 14-4 Chiefs come into this game off a 35 - 24 dismantling of the Tennesee Titans in the AFC Championship game. The Chief are riding an eight game winning streak. With superstars like Patrick Mahomes, Travis Kelce and Tyreek Hill, the Chiefs possess one of the most explosive offenses in the NFL. The matchup between the pass happy Chiefs and the run happy 49ers provides a fascinating study in contrasts.
The 15-3 San Francisco 49ers come into this game off a 37 - 20 demolition of the Green Bay Packers in the NFC Championship game. The 49ers have won four straight games after a late season swoon saw them lose three of six games and almost lose the NFC West crown. The 49ers are a team without obvious weaknesses. They had one of the best offenses and one of the best defenses in the NFL this year. Quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo has a penchant for the turnover; perhaps that’s the 49ers’ weakness. Garoppolo has 14 interceptions this season. Garoppolo had seven touchdowns and six interceptions in his first six games, but has 21 touchdowns and eight interceptions in his last 12 games. Against the Packers the 49ers running game was so dominant that Jimmy Garoppolo threw just eight passes all game. A repeat of that performance against a struggling Chiefs rushing defense would likely mean a championship for the 49ers today.
It’s the Chiefs and the 49ers in an intriguing contrast of styles in Super Bowl LIV. Enjoy the game everybody.
