My SB Nation colleague Dan Kadar has released a new mock draft. In it he has the Jets picking Oklahoma wide receiver CeeDee Lamb in the first round.
11. New York Jets: CeeDee Lamb, WR, Oklahoma
It’s true, the Jets could take an offensive tackle here, and it would be a fine choice. Sam Darnold has almost no weapons on offensem though. Robby Anderson, his best wide receiver, could sign elsewhere this offseason. Keeping Darnold’s pocket clean is nice, but he needs to throw someone the ball.
In this mock Joe Burrow, Chase Young, Tua Tagovailoa, Isaiah Simmons, Jeff Okudah, Justin Herbert, Derrick Brown, Tristan Wirfs, Javon Kinlaw, and Jerry Jeudy are off the board.
Notably Andrew Thomas and Mekhi Becton are still available.
I can’t say the pick itself would necessarily be “wrong.” If Lamb pans out, and Thomas and Becton bust, it would be the correct pick.
I do disagree with Dan’s mindset, though. Keeping Sam Darnold’s pocket clean isn’t “nice.” It’s essential. The Jets need to upgrade their offensive line. With that in mind, I would be surprised to see the Jets pass on a tackle in the event the board falls this way.
