Good morning, Gang Green Nation! There are players I root for that transcend the game. Not in the sense of being transcendentally great at football. Rather, there are players who, to the extent we can ever know what any player is really like away from the spotlight, just seem like really good people. They may not be great or even very good at football at the NFL level, but they seem to be good at being human, and that’s enough to get me to enjoy whatever they contribute to the Jets, however small that might be. I’m sure you have your own favorites, but for me, Brandon Copeland is that guy on the Jets right now. Copeland is not a star. He is a marginal talent who in a career year in 2018 was maybe close to average-ish at his position. Copeland will be 29 years old next season, young by most standards, long in the tooth in the NFL. If Joe Douglas does his job well there will probably be no room on the roster for Copeland next season, as he will likely be replaced by an upgrade in football talent. He’ll move on, perhaps he’ll be out of the NFL entirely. Nobody will mourn the loss of his talent on the field. But I for one will miss rooting for Copeland. Everything we know about him suggests Copeland is a genuinely good man, and it’s fitting that Copeland was honored with the 2020 NFLPA Alan Page Community Award for his work with the underprivileged. If we’ve seen the last of Brandon Copeland in a Jets uniform, that may be a plus for the Jets’ prospects of winning football games, but I can’t help but feel it will be a loss in ways that count so much more.
