The Jets made a coaching change yesterday, firing defensive coordinator Gregg Williams. The changed seemed to be in response to Sunday’s loss to the Raiders where Williams inexplicably sent an all out blitz against a Hail Mary. Derek Carr hit Henry Ruggs for a 46 yard touchdown with 5 seconds left in the fourth quarter. This turned what looked like a Jets victory into a shocking loss.
On today’s podcast I talk about the firing of Williams.
There isn’t much question about whether this firing was merited. Williams and the rest of the coaching staff deserve to go. The timing of it is certainly interesting. While Williams made a terrible call, it is worth wondering why this bad call resulted in termination while so many others from different coaches did not. Everybody was going to be fired in four weeks anyway, and this move will likely have minimal impact on the team over the rest of the season. Sometimes I think Adam Gase just makes moves to show everybody he has the power to make them.
We talk about all of this and more on today’s show. Thanks for listening.
