New York Jets Flight Connections 12/27/20

Good morning, GGN! Rumors are flying that the Jets will fire head coach Adam Gase if the Jets lose to the Cleveland Browns today. Losing to the Browns got a lot more difficult after nearly every receiver on their roster is set to miss the game due to COVID-19 protocols. The Browns will be playing practice squad receivers against the Jets. Now Baker Mayfield will get the opportunity to experience what Sam Darnold felt like earlier in the season when he was throwing to the likes of Jeff Smith, Lawrence Cager, and assorted other practice squad talents.

If the rumors are true and the Jets do fire Gase after losing today, one has to wonder, why now? Of course the vast majority of the fanbase won’t care why he was fired, they’ll just rejoice that he was fired. But the idea that Gase should be fired if he loses to the Browns, but not if he wins, is odd. Whatever happens against a depleted Browns team surely does not outweigh the entire miserable track record Gase has already established with the Jets. Perhaps the new rule allowing in-season contact with coaching candidates tipped the scales for the Jets when they previously were leaning towards waiting until after the season. If so, viva la new rule!
