Dear Gang Green Nation: I am 8 years old.
Some of my little friends say there is no Super Bowl for Jets fans.
Papa says, ‘If you see it in GGN it’s so.’
Please tell me the truth; is there a Super Bowl?
A Young Jets Fan.
115 WEST NINETY-FIFTH STREET.
Young Jets Fan, your little friends are wrong. They have been affected by the skepticism of a Maccagnan age. They do not believe except they see. They Gase into the future and imagination fails. They think that nothing can be which is not comprehensible by their little minds. All minds, Young Jets Fan, whether they be Gase’s or CJ’s, are little. In this great NFL of ours the Jets are mere insects, as compared with the great franchises with great franchise quarterbacks. Yet even insects, when bound together as one in unified purpose, are capable of producing great things: a world flowing with honey.
Yes, Young Jets Fan, there is a Super Bowl. It exists as certainly as love and generosity and Mt. Mekhi exist, and you know that they abound and give to your life its highest beauty and joy. Alas! How dreary would be the Jets fan’s world if there were no hope of a Super Bowl, if not next year, then the year after, or the year after that? It would be as dreary as if there were no Quinnen Williams. There would be no childlike faith then, no unrequited love, no GenoTime7 hope in the face of utter ruin to make tolerable this yearly ritual of aspirations dashed upon yet another season without a trophy. We should have no enjoyment, except in other teams’ travails. The eternal flame with which the fading memory of Joe Namath fuels our dreams would be extinguished.
Not believe in the Super Bowl?! You might just as well believe in Tom Brady! Perish the thought! You might watch on TV the annual gathering on a football field afar on Super Bowl Sunday to see with your own eyes the Jets are not in the Super Bowl, again. But even if they are not in the Super Bowl, what would that prove? The Jets are not in the Super Bowl, but that is no sign that there will never be a Jets Super Bowl. The most real things in the world are those that neither children nor men can see, nor scarcely envision. Did you ever see a Jets team actually win an AFC Championship Game? Of course not! But that’s no proof that they will never do so. Nobody can conceive or imagine all the wonders there are unseen or yet undone in this world. The Jets winning a Super Bowl is no different. Yay, though your little friends suffer in nonbelief, you know better Young Jets Fan. You know, though you can scarcely make sense of it, some day, you WILL see a Jets Super Bowl.
You may tear apart the roster and see what makes the losses mount, but there is a veil covering the unseen world which not the strongest man, nor even the united strength of all the Jets of Jetsmas’ past, could tear asunder. Only faith, belief, the absence of Gase, fandom, poetry, romance, can push aside that curtain and view and picture the supernal beauty and glory we shall one day experience. Is it real? Ah, Young Jets Fan, in all this world there is nothing else more real and abiding.
No Super Bowl? Banish the thought from your mind! The dream lives, as it shall live forever. A thousand years from now, Young Jets Fan, nay, ten times ten thousand years from now, the dream shall continue to abide and make glad the hearts of Jets fans everywhere. No Super Bowl? Young Jets Fan, in the words of a sage far wiser than any Gang Green Nation has ever produced, wait ‘til next year!
