What was the most important play of the Jets’ win over the Rams?

The Jets got their first win of 2020 on Sunday. What do you think was the single most important play of that game?

You could point to a number of key moments in the first half. The Jets put together an opening touchdown drive to take the lead. The defense dominated, constantly putting the Rams behind the sticks. A Bryce Hall interception and a blocked put set up scores.

Early in the second half, Frank Gore’s touchdown gave the Jets a 20-3 lead which proved to be insurmountable. The Jets also got some key stops on defense in the fourth quarter.

My choice is none of these, however. It was a play the Jets defense didn’t make. With the Jets leading 23-17 halfway though the fourth quarter, Cam Akers broke an 18 yard touchdown run. It was called back on a holding penalty.

If the play had stood, the Rams likely would have taken a 24-23 lead with the extra point. From there I think they probably would have won the game. It would have been the latest Jets 2020 collapse.

After the penalty the Rams had to settle for a field goal cutting the lead to 23-20. The score would hold.
