In a weird Wednesday afternoon time slot courtesy of COVID-19, today the Pittsburgh Steelers host the Baltimore Ravens in a game postponed multiple times. It probably should have been canceled and rescheduled later in the year, but that would have pushed back the playoff schedule, so here we are.
Wednesday games are a rarity in the NFL. But this season is just weird in every way. With this Wednesday game the NFL will have played every day of the week this year. You don’t see that too often.
The 6-4 Baltimore Ravens enter this game reeling from three losses in their last four games. Starting quarterback and reigning NFL MVP Lamar Jackson will miss the game due to COVID-19, along with several other key teammates, putting the Ravens at a severe disadvantage in this crucial game. A loss to the Steelers today would put the Ravens’ playoff hopes in jeopardy.
The 10-0 Pittsburgh Steelers come into the game looking to extend their perfect record to 11-0. The Steelers already beat the Ravens in Baltimore at full strength earlier this year. Beating them again in Pittsburgh with the Ravens missing Lamar Jackson should be expected. The Steelers are playing for home field advantage throughout the playoffs. The Kansas City Chiefs are 10-1 and a loss by the Steelers would drop them into a tie with the Chiefs for the #1 seed.
This game should have been a prime time barn burner. The renewal of one of the NFL’s best rivalries should have been one of the best games of the year. Instead we have a strange Wednesday afternoon contest in which the Ravens are severely handicapped. Such is the NFL in the year of COVID-19. It’s the Ravens and the Steelers on Wednesday Afternoon Football. Enjoy the game everybody.
