Mock Offseason: Bringing Dignity Back to the Jets

What’s up Gang Green Gangsters? You may remember me from GenoAllWize Island, and the Anti Savior movement hear on GGN. Maybe you even remember me as the last Sam Darnold fan in Jets Nation. Regardless of how you know me you know I love a good mock offseason with some outside of the box thinking. I think the Jets have become one of the worst ran organizations in all of sports. Getting back to just a stable organization seems like a monumental task, but I want to take it a step further and lay out on offseason that’s the beginning of a dynasty. So here is my attempt at that:

Coaching Staff:

Head Coach- Matt Campbell- what could have been. I believe Campbell would already be the Jets coach if we had fired Macc and hired JD at the appropriate time. Campbell has built a program from absolutely nothing. In a conference full of great QBs, coaches and athletes he has built a great football team at Iowa State.

OC- Brian Johnson- Johnson is a very fast rising name at the college ranks. He has Kyle Trask looking like a first round pick, and the entire Florida offense looking like one of the top offenses in the country.

DC- Brent Venables- Venables will most certainly get looks at being a head coach at the NFL level, but I think he is better suited to spend a few years as a DC while learning the ins and outs of the NFL. He is an A+ defensive mind with a knock at devolving talent at all three levels of the defense.

Resignings and Cuts(cap hit/savings):

Current Cap: $79.6 mil

Resignings:

Marcus Maye 4 years, $42 mil ($9 mil)- While I’m not a huge fan of paying big money to a Safety, Maye Is very good at what he does. He is also a team leader and improving every year.

Neville Hewitt 3 year $15 mil ($5 mil)- if I had my way Cj Mosley and his contract would be a thing of the past. However, I don’t want to lose Hewitt as he is really a tone setter for this defense. Since nobody really knows if Mosley will be back, Hewitt is our guy.

Pat Eiflen 1 year $3 mil- Eiflen has been up and down most of his career, but he is still young and cheap.

Terell Basham 1 year $1 mil- good rotational depth piece.

As good a Brian Poole is, I don’t think he is back next season. So this is it for my resignings.

Cuts:

Jamison Crowder ($10 mil)- Crowder is a fine player, but doesn’t really bring much extra and is hurt a fair amount.

Henry Anderson ($8.2 mil)- I think the fact that Henry Anderson is due to make $10 mil this season shows the level of incompetence of this franchise.

Alex Lewis ($5.6 mil)- Nothing personal just didn’t pan out.

Ryan Griffin ($1.8 mil)- Again with the bad players.

Braxton Berrios ($.8 mil)- If the Jets want to pay cash for someone with little athletic ability to fair catch, I’ll do it for half.

Josh Doctson ($.9 mil)- Not sure if he’s ever suited up.

$88.9 mil cap number after resignings and cuts

Free Agent Signings

Joe Thuney 5 years $96 mil ($17 mil)- JD ponies up and gets one of the best free agent linemen to ever hit free agency. Thuney is an absolute stud LG.

Kenny Golladay 5 years $89 mil ($14 mil)- imagine the Jets having a strong line and receivers at the same time. Golladay is an absolute burner capable of playing inside or out.

Shaq Barrett 5 years $86 mil ($16 mil)- JD gives Barrett a large signing bonus and Keeps the cap hit low. Jets finally get their first elite pass rusher since Johnathan Abraham. Welcome big guy.

Jamal Williams 3 years $14 mil ($5 mil)- Williams is excellent in passing and 3rd down situations. He pairs wel with Perriman and Ty Johnson.

Demarcus Robinson 1 year $5 mil ($5 mil)- Buried on the Chiefs depth chart. Robinson takes a trip to New York to prove he’s a legit receiver. I love the little things and how hard Robinson works at the little things.

Geral Everett 4 years $20 mil ($5 mil)- the theme of this is to find guys buried On good teams. Everett is a very capable blocker and big time capabilities as a receiver.

Eli Apple 2 year $10 mil ($5 mil)- Apple is a serviceable corner, with potential to be pretty good in the right system.

Malik Hooker 1 year $6 mil ($6 mil)- I love Hookers game and I think we’d benefit tremendously from having three capable Safeties in the secondary. Hooker did suffer an Achilles tear, so his price tag is very low. Hooker gets a chance to prove his isn’t injury prone and came be a game changer.

Cap number $15.9 mil

Draft:

Trades: JD pulls off the heist that will set this franchise up for success for the next 15 years.

Jets receive: Gardner Minshew, pick 2, 21, pick 34 and 2022 1st

Jaguars receive pick 1

Jets receive pick 4, 36 2022 1st and 3rd

Dallas Receives pick 2

Round 1, Pick 4- Patrick Surtain JR, CB- there really isn’t anything I love more about football than a WR CB matchup. I love both positions to be physical. Surtain is the man when it comes to man coverage. He’s tall, he’s fast, he has excellent ball skills, and most importantly he is extremely fluid in everything he does. He reminds me a lot of Revis, and I just can’t get over how much this kid has developed. I really wanted to go offense hear, but Surtain is a special special player.

Round 1, Pick 21- Creed Humphrey, C- Let me know if you’ve heard this before "and another sack right up the middle for the opposing team." Seems like an every week deal hear in New York. Humphrey is a clean prospect. He runs well. He blocks well. He has clean hands. He fills a massive while in the middle of our line.

Round 1, Pick 26- Rondale Moore, WR- so you’re probably wondering why we’d take two receivers and sign two more, while also having a Denzel Mims. Well the answer is simple, we have been that bad. Moore is a different kind of player. He’s explosive. He can beat you deep. He can be a gimmick player in the run game. He is a bit undersized and his hands could improve, but Moore is an absolute Game Changer.

Pick 33- Asante Samuel Jr, CB- Samuel to me has all the makings of a an elite slot corner. Instead of letting this defense rot, I want to build a nasty defense we can be proud of. We start fresh with a young but talented secondary in the first two rounds.

Pick 34- Terrace Marshal JR, WR- we need as many big play players as we can get. Marshal has stepped in and proved his is in the same class as some very good receivers. Solid hands, solid routes, and excellent speed. In a deep WR class he slips into the second round.

Pick 36- Jamie Newman, QB- the long forgotten prospect in this draft class. Without a doubt the best dual threat QB in the class. Similar to Josh Allen he has an amazing deep ball, but due to poor mechanics he leaves a lot to be desired in short yardage accuracy. He opted out this year, and went to the same coach as Jalen Hurts did to prepare for the draft. He gets a chance to learn the offense and be groomed correctly.

Pick 65- Jovante Williams, RB- I don’t think you need a first round RB or a $100 mil RB. However, I think teams that can run the ball well and punch you in the mouth, has a much better chance at success. Williams is an absolute monster. He runs like Derrick Henry.

Pick 90- Elerson Smith, EDGE- if there is one thing I’ve learned over the years it’s that you can never have too many pass rushers. Smith is a beast of a man at 6’7" and had more sacks than anyone last season.

Pick 103- Jacoby Stevens, S- a thumper in the secondary. He is a box safety all day, with coverage skills as bad as Jamal Adams . A real tone setter and depth price on the secondary.

Pick 145- Zach Davidson, TE- Davidson has been growing as a tight end every year. 6’7" 245 pounds with solid hands and very good route running abilities. The kicker, he is also a very good punter. Watch out Newman, your guy Mann may have some competition.

Pick 153- Abraham Lucas, OT- you may think I’m going a bit overkill on the lineman, but we are really really bad up front. We lack depth. We lack starting caliber linemen in most spots. Frankly we just suck. With covid and injuries you can never have too man. Lucas is your pro typical size for a tackle. He is athletic, but does have some issues with speed rushers. He’s better suited on the right side.

Pick 188- Jose Borregales, K- I’m usually against drafting a kicker, until I watched the Seattle game. Borregales has a long of 57 yards, has hit 90% of his field goals, and 100% of his extra points. Sergio will be brought to camp, but the Jets finally get the kicker they’ve desperately need.

Conclusions and Thoughts:

For my entire Jets fandom career we’ve always been a "Shiny New Toy" or "Savior" type team. I’m not sure if it’s the pressure of New York, the societal instant gratification, or a combination. I’ve always hated our drafts and free agency as a whole, until last year. Mims and Hall were the first two players I loved as prospects, that we’ve drafted. I wanted a LT and even though Becton wasn’t my top choice, I was very happy with it. So I tried to apply what I want out of this team.

First I’m a Darnold guy no doubt. I think being a 20 year old kid, and given the franchise with bad coaches and bad talent leads to what we have right now. People always ask, "what would Mahomes look like here?" Crazy right? Probably the most talented QB to ever play, and there is serious doubt on whether we’d even be a playoff team. So let’s get Minshew and Darnold in a true QB battle with a fresh start and a much improved offense. Give Campbell year with both of those guys and I’m willing to bet one is our long term starter, and the only guy is flipped for a second round pick. I’ll take that or the hopes of Trevor Lawrence being tasks with saving this franchise, even though he is an elite prospect.

If you’re wondering what lead to my wild trades here it is: The Jaguars may be the only team blatantly tanking. Sitting a healthy Minshew leads me to believe they want to use him in a bargaining chip for the top pick. He won’t fetch a first round value, but they get their guy. Also in this scenario the cowboys realize they are in cap Hell. The do a franchise and trade for Dak Prescott to the Raiders for a bounty of picks once they secure the second pick from us where they ultimately take Justin Fields.

Let me know what you guys think. I apologize to both the Lawrence and Fields fans in advance. This probably isn’t your most favorite mock. Appreciate you guys as always.
