On our Middle Linebacker combo:

BJ said it yesterday but kind of funny how we were supposed to have the best ILB duo for 2 years and got 1 quarter of them together.

On the Jets:

My thoughts on this game and season.

1) The Alphabet still has more “W’s” then the Jets. 2) Andy Reid has no respect for Adam Gase. Fake punt for first down, running it on 4-2 twice with Bell. Will other teams see this and continue this thru the last 8 games? 3) What happened at half time yet again? The Jets got away from any pre-snap motion, roll outs, and throwing to Mims yet again. Back to the Gore show running the ball. The Jets were actually still in the game, and getting the ball to start the second half. Even a field goal would of cut the lead to 9. What happens at half time to revert back to the worst offense in the NFL? 4) Sam Darnold needs to stop saying “Omaha.” He is not Peyton Manning. Adam Gase was not successful because of his offense, it was all Manning. Plus when Manning said Omaha, he was either audibling or sending a player in motion to read the defense. It’s embarrassing when Darnold says it, because he is not allowed to audible, or send a player in motion. So please stop. 5) The Jets have the worst starting outside CB’s in the league, and I do not think it’s close. 6) Yay!! We traded Avery Williams to Pittsburgh with a 7th, for a 5th in 2022. Don’t know how this makes us better, since he is the only one with Hewitt that can tackle. 7) I feel bad for anyone who watched the whole game as a Jets fan, that was ugly. Reid was a cat, playing with a mouse (Gase) before he killed it. 8) Say what you want about the Steelers or Saints, or Seahawks, the Chiefs are going to repeat as SB champs. That is all, have a nice day!!

I agree that the coaching “hot seat” is more like a microwave in this era however I don’t think the next coach really has to contend with a bunch of players ruined by Gase. Joe Douglas has already started to put his fingerprint on this roster and we have young guys who have showed something during his tenure despite him being HC (Kyle-Phillip, Q showing flashes, possibly Mims). If anything, the cupboard will basically be bare by the time a new coach comes in and together with JD they will have the top 3 cap space and possibly top 3 draft pick in most rounds in order to put together their squad. A lot can be done if they’re smart. The main player who would’ve probably suffer the after effects of Gase is most likely Darnold and it’s looking more and more like he’s a goner next off season. The rest are mostly short term deals, UDFA’s, and Joe’s first class.

Two things here:

1. His draft has been pretty good. Becton is a strong pick and may be the best or second best OT in the whole class and looks to be a franchise LT. Denzel Mims looks like a star in the making and is already setting Jets records just two games into his career. Bryce Huff is arguably the 2nd best pass rusher from the 2020 NFL Draft so far. Braden Mann, from raw punting stats, has been an average to above-average punter making him well worth the 6th round pick. We’ll get even more news from this class in Week 9 when Bryce Hall returns to the field. It’s easy to forget, but if a draft class has 2 starters in it then it’s considered an above average class. This class still may have 3 or 4 depending on what Davis and Hall show the rest of the year. That would make this an elite level draft class even if none of the players are All-Pro caliber. 2. He gave bland GM speak because he wasn’t going to step on toes in a mid-season press conference. Why would he throw Sam under the bus when he doesn’t know where they’re picking yet? Why would he throw Gase under the bus publicly when there’s nothing he can do about it? I’m not saying Joe Douglas is the be all end all who is going to save the franchise. He has his share of issues, his free agency was absolutely horrendous for example. However, he was brought in for his scouting acumen and ability to build this team through the draft. So far, his first draft class looks solid at least with even bigger upside and he has a treasure trove of picks and cap space to use in an unprecedented offseason in 2021. So instead of throwing him under the bus acknowledge what he’s done right and wrong and get ready for the next step in 2021.

Whether you think Darnold has something to offer or not, it is clear that it would be better if he were on another team. It does not matter what the “for” or “against” arguments are. It has not worked out. Not for him and not for the Jets. It does not matter who the coach is. He should move on. It will be best for all parties. The thought of TL and Darnold on the same roster irritates me. Could anything be more Jets? How the heck is that expected to work out? Get something for Darnold (or not) but do not put the fan base thru that circus. It is one of the most toxic ideas I have read here on GGN. Smells like epic disaster. Do I think Darnold ever had the platform to shine with the Jets? No. Do I think he could\should be better even with the Jets? Yes. Whose fault is it? I do not care. We are a horrific NFL franchise by any measure. I am convinced, as constructed/led/built, we can ruin any talent at QB. Basically, until we have a functional O-line, I don’t think it matters who the QB is. Dream of TL or Fields... I dream of an offensive line. I do not trust the current structure to be good at football decisions so... I will watch the developments with passive interest. Based on recent history, I would expect my connection to the Jets or the NFL to wane over time... That is ok.

On the presser with JD:

Here’s what I took from the presser:

1) Gase will 100% be back next season, no question 2) Darnold will 100% be back next season 3) JD will spend pretty big on the offensive side of the ball next season. I just hope that Gase comes to the realization that maybe we can get a real coordinator in here and an above average QB coach.

On Joe Douglas supporting Gase:

Douglas could have easily answered differently. He could have said we are evaluating our staff, or a lot of different things are being discussed right now Instead, he gave a one word answer that supported Gase. He shouldn’t have said it.

On having faith in Joe Douglas:

“Do you have faith in Joe Douglas” is such an... interesting question because you can believe literally anything on faith. His player acquisitions have been underwhelming, his first draft is a massive question mark beyond Becton, and his commitment to Sam Darnold and Adam Gase (even though he couldn’t throw them under the bus) is nerve-wracking. He’s going to have to do pretty much everything right between January and late-April to earn confidence, let alone faith. Of course, if Adam Gase is still the head coach by then it won’t matter to me anymore.

--MachlinT1000

I’d have way more faith if Gase is gone. Douglas though for sure has a lot of work and even if he does a few good things some aren’t going to be happy. They’ll expect a quick turnover which isn’t going to happen here. This team is was below rock bottom at this point. Heck he’ll still have 2-3 awful contract he’s stuck with next year as well.
