2021: A Way to Move Forward

4 games into the 2020 season the Jets are a terrible, rotten, unwatchable team with no hope of playing competitive football. The game against the Denver Broncos was two bad teams playing each other, and we were only competitive for 3 of those quarters. We made Rypien look like Brady. We generate no pass rush. We barely stopped the run. We couldn’t cover even the most unproven guys on that team. With almost everything surrounding the Jets in doubt, I wanted to dive into how I would approach the remainder of the season, and what a 2021 offseason might look like. I apologize in advance if you don’t like articles like these so early in the season, but quite honestly the 2021 offseason is the only thing making us interesting.

2020 Season:

Fire Adam Gase and Dowell Loggains. No explanation needed. They are very bad at their jobs.

Promote Jim Bob Cooter to head coach. Let Gregg Williams coach the defense. Williams may seem like the obvious candidate, but I’m not so sure. His defense has been decent. He isn’t given much to work with. However, his unit lost its composure yesterday. Strong leaders don’t do that. With his history in the league, I’m not so sure a coach like Williams would be beneficial.

Cuts: Conner McDermott, Braxton Berrios, Chris Hogan, Trevon Wesco, Pierre Desir and, Kelan Ballage.

Practice Squad Pick Ups: Trey Adams, Stanley Morgan Jr., J.J. Taylor, Antoine Brooks Jr., Lavert Hill, and Antonio Calloway. These players would be given the remainder of the season to earn a roster spot for 2021.

2021 Season:

HC: Josh McDaniel- bit of a wild card here. However, I’m going to assume his stint with Denver is in the past, and he’s grown from learning from one of the best coaches in NFL history. The patriots have not only revamped their offense, they lost one of the best QBs in nfl history and didn’t miss a beat. Plain and simple, McDaniel may be the best head coaching candidate, and perhaps he’s been waiting for the right opportunity that fits him and his family.

OC: Mike McDaniel- The current run game coordinator for the 49ers is about the most underrated coach in the league. It doesn’t matter who the back is, they 49ers run game is always ready to go and always produces at a very high level. He also comes from a very strong Wel ran organization.

QB Coach: Brian Johnson- He is the current OC for the Florida Gators, after working his way up from the QB coach. He has Trask playing at an extremely high level, as well as the entire offense. He is the type of guy we need in our QBs ear.

DC: Don Martindale- the current linebackers coach for the Baltimore Ravens. Former assistant of the year. Baltimore is basically Linebacker U. Let’s give Wink a shot to bring some respect back to this defense.

DB Coach: Darell Regis- yep you heard this right. One of the best CBS to have ever played the position. If he has any interest in coaching, I want him learning from Wink and teaching these young groups of corners we are about to have.

Cuts (cap savings): $73.4 mil with the 2020 cuts

Leveon Bell ($9.5 mil)- Just a bad signing all around. Bell is a solid player, just not a good fit here.

Henry Anderson ($8.2 mil)- I have no words to describe how terrible this signing this was. Absolutely terrible player right now.

Greg Van Roten and Alex Lewis ($8.6 mil)- this is a pretty terrible line right now. I can’t really justify keeping two players for their price tags, when they are incredibly underwhelming players.

Josh Malone, Mike White, Leo Kolomonatgni, and Josh Doctson ($3.6 mil): All non contributors and guys really not worth keeping.

Total Cap Space: $103.3 Mil

Resigning:

Jeff Smith, WR- 1 year $2.1 mil ($2.1 mil)

Antonio Calloway, WR- 1 Year $.9 mil ($ .9 mil)

Marcus Maye, S- 4 years $36 mil ($9 mil)

Stanley Morgan Jr., Wr- 1 year $.9 mil ($.9)

Trey Adams, T- 1 year $1 mil ($1 mil)

Free Agents:

Joe Thuney, G- 6 years $87 mil ($16 mil)- There is no such thing as a sure thing. However, he is about as close as you’ll ever get.

Pat Eiflen, G- 2 years $6 mil ($3 mil)- Fringe starter and solid depth piece.

Derek Wolfe, DE- 2 years, $7 mil ($3.5 mil)- Pass rushers are arguably this teams biggest need. 7 sacks in 2019. He is off to a solid start this year.

Vinny Curry, EDGE- 3 years $26 mil ($8 mil)- a mid tier pass rusher for a modest contract.

Marvin Jones Jr. WR 3 years $29 mil ($9 mil)- a very good WR to help shape out this wide receiver group.

Jason Peters T 1 year $4 mil ($4 mil)- Peters is almost like Adrian Peterson. He ages very well. He also has moved around the line recently. If he starts 16 games we are in bad shape, but he is definitely an above average linemen for depth.

Corn Elder, CB 3 years $22 mil ($7 mil)- if there was a diamond in the rough it’s this kid. He is having a very solid year down in Carolina. Being from Iowa when a guy named corn become available you grab him.

Kevin King, CB 2 years $10 mil ($5 mil)- King is an incredibly hard player to predict. He is almost a lock down corner, and then gives up a big play. Perhaps some of that is the style of defense and playing opposite of Jaire Alexander. However he did have 6 ints and is a long corner that brings a ton of athleticism.

Keanue Neal, S 4 years $31 mil ($8 mil)- let’s bring back a dynamic safety duo for the price of 1 Jamal Adams. The Neal Maye backfield will be something we can rest easy at night about.

Phillip Lindsey,RB 3 years $17 mil ($5 mil) this kid is one of my favorite backs in all of football. He is a pass catcher, he picks up blitzes, and he runs very hard. They always try to replace him and he keeps on producing.

Reggie Ragland, ILB 1 year, $3 mil ($3 mil)- I’m not entirely sure Mosley will ever play a down as a Jet. Ragland is a nice rotational player for the inside backer group.

Mark Barron, ILB/S 1 year, $3 mil ($3 mil)- Hard nose tough player with versatility. Again not a superstar, but a solid depth piece.

Jacoby Brissett, QB 1 year, $8 mil ($8 mil)- spoiler alert, we aren’t tanking for Goldy Locks. We are taking two talent QBs, with great attitudes and having a good old fashion QB battle.

Cap Space remaining: $20.8 mil leaving plenty of roll over for next season.

Draft Day: Pick 1, let’s be real we are picking in the top spot.

Draft Day Trade:

Pick 1 to the Jacksonville Jaguars for pick 4, 46, 36 106 and 2022 2nd round pick. The Jaguars keep their second first round pick this year and next year. We drop 3 spots and pick up 3 2nd round picks and a 4th. A mutually beneficial trade.

Pick 4: Jamar Chase, WR LSU- the Jets are building a solid stable of receivers. However, we need depth and more importantly we need a legitimate WR1. We need an alpha dog. Chase is the best receiving prospect to come out of college since Calvin Johnson.

Pick 32(Seattle)- Asante Samuel JR, Florida State- Samuel is an undersized playmaking corner with the ability to play both inside and outside. Expect a lot of big time plays from this kid.

Pick 33- Deonte Brown, G, Alabama- we need to bring a nasty level of play to this line. Becton has it. They other guys? Not even close. This kid is a true road grate with a nasty punch.

Pick 36- Quincy Roche, DE, Miami- we need pass rushers. We need to generate as much as possible. Curry and Wolfe paired with Q is a start. Roche is that missing piece.

Pick 46- Alaric Jackson, T, Iowa- ultimately Jackson needs to have a strong season at Iowa to be in the second round conversation. He is a LT in college and started over Wirfs, but ultimately will be a RT at the next level.

Pick 65- Jabril Cox, LB, LSU- this is a pick that could very well be void depending on Cox’s play. He was excellent at NDSU and has second round potential. However, I think 3rd round is a more realistic draft slot for him. Excellent speed and instincts, along with a body to play both inside or outside.

94(Seattle)- Glenn Logan, DT, LSU- a real lunch pail blue collar type player here. Very good in the run game. Not overly athletic and will need to improve on the pass rush.

Pick 103, Victor Dimukeje, OLB, Duke- 8.5 sacks last year. 4 sacks this year. He wins a lot with athleticism, and will need to add a bit of weight at the next level. Probably fills the off the ball backer role at the next level.

Pick 106(Jacksonville)- Robert Rochelle, CB, Central Arkansas- one of the best small school prospects around. Fluid in coverage with great instincts. Spent the summer bulking up, and is off to a solid start this year.

Pick 143- Shawn Davis, S, Florida- Davis is a guy that worked his way up from special teams to be the best safety Florida has. His best plays came in the most crucial moments of the 2019 season. This kid is a gamer that just needs more time to develop.

Pick 148- Tony Poljan, TE, Virginia- a mountain of a man at 6’7" tall. Poljan is a transfer from Central Michigan. He started his collegiate career as a dual threat QB before switching to TE last season racking up over 500 yards.

Pick 207- Trey Ragas, RB, Louisiana Lafayette- Ragas is a pure bruising running back. He is built similar to Marshawn Lynch, and runs a lot like him. He will be an excellent change of pace back behind Lindsey and Perine.

Pick 224- Cade Johnson, WR, NDSU- Johnson is a small school superstar. 2500 yards and 25 TDs the last 2 seasons. He is only 5’10" and 175 pounds. He will also have to learn the game a bit more to succeed at the next level. Solid candidate for a kick returner job as well.

This is the conclusion of what I would do if I were Joe Douglas starting today, and going into next offseason. Sorry for such an early mock, but this team is too brutal to get excited about. Hope you enjoyed reading.
