Thursday Night Football, Week 7. Tonight the Philadelphia Eagles host the New York Giants in one of the worst prime time matchups in recent memory. These two teams have two wins combined on the season.
The 1-5 Giants come into this game fresh off a victory over the Football Team. The awful Giants offense is missing the injured Saquon Barkley, out for the season. Without Barkley the Giants have been unable to move the ball. In six games so far this season the Giants have yet to exceed 300 yards of total offense. Their offensive ineptitude extends to both the passing and the running game, where they rank 30th in the NFL in each. The Giants defense has been decent, but without being able to move the ball a decent defense has not been nearly enough.
The 1-4-1 Eagles have not struggled to move the ball as much as the Giants, but turnovers have been their undoing. The Eagles offense has turned the ball over 12 times this season versus just five turnovers by their opponents. The Eagles have yet to play a turnover-free game, and have lost the turnover battle in all but one game all year. The Eagles will be missing a large chunk of their offense tonight, as their top running back, two top tight ends, and three of their top receivers will all be out of the lineup tonight. Add to that the Eagles’ woes on their offensive line, which has been unable to protect quarterback Carson Wentz, and Wentz himself having the worst year of his career, and the Eagles are poised to match the Giants gaffe for gaffe in a race to the bottom of offensive offenses.
Amazingly, the Eagles are playing for first place, and the Giants are playing to stay within a half game of first place, in the incomparably, laughably terrible NFL East. This matchup will likely have very little appeal outside the local markets, as two bad football teams with two worse offenses collide.
It’s the Eagles and the Giants in one of the least compelling games of the year on Thursday Night Football. And still it will probably be better than watching the Jets. Enjoy the game everybody.
