In the pre-season opener, on a balmy August night in East Rutherford, New Jersey, the New York Jets lost to the New York Giants 31 - 22.
The Jets first string offense dominated on the opening drive behind Sam Darnold, marching right down the field, culminating with a touchdown pass to Jamison Crowder on a well executed pick play. Unfortunately Chandler Catanzaro missed the extra point, the first of two missed extra points by the Jets kicker on the night.
The Jets first string defense then came on and dominated, forcing the Giants first string offense into a three and out on their first possession. From that point both first string units were done for the day, and backups began to filter in for both teams on both sides of the ball.
The Jets offense played OK under second string quarterback Trevor Siemian, finishing the first half with two more scoring drives. The Giants backups matched the Jets with two touchdowns and a field goal, and at halftime the score was 17-15, Giants, with the difference being two missed extra points by Catanzaro.
In the second half, with both teams reaching deep into the back of their respective rosters, the Giants scrubs dominated the Jets scrubs, shutting the Jets out until a last minute touchdown drive engineered by Jets fourth string quarterback Luke Falk.
With the loss the Jets pre-season record for 2019 goes to 0-1. That record of course is meaningless. Nobody will remember or care about pre-season results once the regular season is under way.
I’ll be around for a more in depth recap of tonight’s game a bit later this evening. In the meantime leave your comments on the game below.
