Even though there was no practice on Saturday, it still was a busy weekend for the Jets.
The team’s top cornerback, Trumaine Johnson, suffered an injury in training camp on Sunday. After picking off an errant Sam Darnold pass Johnson suffered an apparent hamstring injury on the return. He did not return to practice.
The team also made a necessary kicker change. Chandler Catanzaro announced his retirement. Taylor Bertolet was signed as his replacement. How permanent Bertolet’s status will be with the team likely depends on his performance in the rest of the preseason. In any event Catanzaro’s struggles throughout training camp and the preseason opener didn’t leave the Jets with much of a choice. They had to do something to address the kicker position.
The team also offered a bit of clarity on Brian Winters’ status. The starting right guard was injured against the Giants. It doesn’t sound like he’s ready to immediately rejoin the lineup.
We discuss all of this on today’s podcast.
