In a surprising development, New York Jets kicker Chandler Catnzaro has decided to retire from the NFL. The 28 year old Catanzaro kicked for the Jets two years ago and was relatively successful in 2017 before the Jets chose to replace him last season with Jason Myers. Catanzaro struggled badly last year with the Arizona Cardinals, and his struggles only intensified this year in Jets camp after the Jets chose to let Myers walk after the 2018 season and re-sign Catanzaro. Catanzaro’s struggles culminated in two missed extra points in Thursday’s pre-season opener against the Giants. Three days later, he is gone.
To replace Catanzaro the Jets signed Taylor Bertolet, a 26 year old free agent kicker who has been in several NFL camps since 2016, including Jets camp in 2018, but has never won a job as an NFL kicker in the regular season. Bertolet has a strong but somewhat erratic leg. There is a good chance the Jets kicker for the 2019 season is still not on the roster.
