The second Jets practice of training camp is now in the books, and by all accounts it was a big day for the passing game.
Good start. First play of practice is an absolute dime from Sam Darnold to Montgomery for a would-be TD. Beat Mosley. Miles slow getting over #Jets— Connor Hughes (@Connor_J_Hughes) July 26, 2019
Another one from Darnold. Beautiful pass down sideline to Powell. Cooking early #Jets— Connor Hughes (@Connor_J_Hughes) July 26, 2019
Darnold again to Montgomery on wheel with #Jets in hurry-up. D having trouble with the RBs— Connor Hughes (@Connor_J_Hughes) July 26, 2019
Sam Darnold touchdown. 55-yard bomb to Robby Anderson. Beat Trumaine Johnson by a good 5-10 yards. #Jets— Connor Hughes (@Connor_J_Hughes) July 26, 2019
Sam Darnold just dropped a beautiful 50-yard pass to Enunwa, who grabbed it over Darryl Roberts’ head #NYJ— Brian Costello (@BrianCoz) July 26, 2019
Two nice catches in a row by Quincy Enunwa, both over Darryl Roberts. A 50-yard TD from Sam Darnold and a circus catch in tight coverage. Enunwa showing he can be more than Mr. Bubble Screen. #Jets— Rich Cimini (@RichCimini) July 26, 2019
Trumaine Johnson on Sam Darnold: “He’s special” #Jets— Connor Hughes (@Connor_J_Hughes) July 26, 2019
As always please note this is one practice. There isn’t much to be gained by overanalyzing the daily temperature of the team. This is what happened.
If the Jets are going to have a good 2019, I presume this will be a football team carried by its offense. It will need the young quarterback to breakout and the big names at skill positions to produce to their capabilities. Unlike many recent successful Jets teams, the defense will not be tasked with carrying the team. It will need to be good enough. That’s the plan at least.
Perhaps the Darnold to Anderson 50 yard touchdown against Johnson can be considered a microcosm of the current situation. I don’t think it will be the last time we hear that Darnold and Anderson connected deep. I don’t think it will be the last time we hear that Johnson got burned.
