Jets Fire GM Mike Maccagnan, Name Adam Gase Interim GM

In a stunning move, the New York Jets have fired general manager Mike Maccagnan and named head coach Adam Gase interim general manager pending the search for a new general manager.

The timing of this move is puzzling to say the least. Maccagnan survived the end of the 2018 season, when head coach Todd Bowles was fired. He led the search for a new head coach, hired Adam Gase as that head coach, led the team through free agency and the draft, then got fired after essentially setting the conditions for the next couple of years for this team. There had been rumors of internal strife between Maccagnan and Gase which were denied by all parties. It appears such denials were false. Adam Gase appears to have won an internal power struggle, just a few months after being hired. The Jets now will conduct a search for a new general manager after most candidates have already solidified their positions for the coming year. Regardless of who is named the new general manager, it is possible, maybe probable, that Gase will be the real power in the front office.

Maccagnan led the Jets to a four year record of 24-40, with zero playoff appearances, during his tenure. His time with the Jets was marked by significant success in the first round of the draft and little to show for later rounds. He claimed to want to build through the draft yet built mainly through free agency, and rarely obtained extra draft choices. His contract negotiations led to many large deals that rarely bore significant fruit.
