Jets Mock Draft with Trades

Everyone else is doing it, so why not me? Every year we see hundreds of mock drafts, but none of them include players the team has actually invested time in scouting. Here's a mock with a description, and an blurb to support why we want this player. It is all based off of who the Jets have met with, rather than who I hope they'd pick up.

Here we go!

Round 1 *Trade*

Jets trade 1st round pick (3), and 6th round pick (196) to the Oakland Raiders for Raiders 1st round pick 2019 (4) 2nd round pick 2019 (35), and 3rd round pick 2020.

Raiders select Josh Allen with pick 3 of the draft replacing Khalil Mack.

Round 1 (Pick 4 from Raiders)

Jets select Jonah Williams Left Offensive Tackle Alabama with pick 4. Jonah WIlliams is one of about 4 players in all of the draft that the Jets have had more than one meeting with. They've met at the combine, and brought Williams in for a private visit. Of all the players in the draft Williams is probably the most pro ready and gave up 1 sack and 12 pressures in the past two seasons combined. He is going to be a 3, and maybe 4 contract left tackle for the Jets before going off to the hall of fame. Don't believe me. Read this article:

Round 2 (35)

CB Justin Layne Michigan State. Layne will come in as a day 1 starter at corner opposite Trumaine Johnson. Michigan State spits out NFL caliber DB's like they were on an assembly line. This fills a long term need at a cheap price for 5 years to offset Trumaine Johnson's large contract. The best thing to like about Layne is he can play press, or bump and run coverage. He's also allowed about 22% completion rate in college to opposing quarterbacks which is ridiculous.

Round 3

Round 3 (68)

C Connor McGovern Penn State. The Jets need to continue to beef up the line, and Maccagnan needs players that can play now. McGovern has started since his true freshman season, has experience as a center and a guard and is bigger/stronger physically than the rest of his peers at 6'5 and 310 pounds. Drafting him allows the Jets to address the center position, and even the guard position depending on where he best fits. Both Jonathan Harrison and Brian Winters are put on notice.

*TRADE*

Pick (93) Trade up to pick (81)

Jets trade 3rd round pick (93), and Darron Lee to Vikings for 3rd round pick (81). The Jets trade away Darron Lee rather than losing him for nothing. With the move the Jets select

Pick (81 from Vikings)

DE Rashan Gary Michigan. I Know what you are thinking. Gary will be gone in the first round, this is more than a reach. Consider the Raiders who drafted DT Maurice Hurst and Connor Cook in the 4th round. Both the DT and QB were rated as mid 1st round grades. This year, the faller of the draft is Rashan Gary. Despite the fact he ran a 4.58 at 277 pounds, he is described as having no pass rush moves to speak of, poor vision, poor reaction time, and most damning under productive. The draft hype amps him up because he was a workout warrior, but the film knocks him back down to earth because "film don't lie". Jets draft him as a project player and he can project in to the defensive end spot when the team becomes 43 dominant.

Round 4 (Pick 105)

RB/KR/PR/WR Bryce Love Stanford. Bryce Love would have been a 1st round pick in 2018. He had a 2,000 yard season and came out a year too late. He also tore his ACL at the end of the season, so his value is severely depressed. The Jets can draft and stash for a year on IR and for the next decade he can be for the Jets what Darren Sproles has been for the Saints and Eagles. A third down back, and man to take all kick and punt return duties. Also seen as a super intelligent and high character player. I like Love a lot, and he has a lot of different uses to supplement offense and special teams. SInce the Jets signed Ty Montgomery, I'm assuming that Love will take the torch from him in 2020.

Round 7 (Pick 217)

S Will Harris Boston College. 4 year starter. Long, lean deep cover safety with 4.4 speed. Has potential as a backup and special teams player to finally dethrone Rontez Miles from his guaranteed roster spot. Can also actually cover people which is a plus.

There you have it. Six players drafted, with three potential day 1 starters, a couple of extra mid round picks in next years draft thrown in for good measure. This is not necessarily my draft board, or where I would want the Jets to draft, but based off of the players that the Jets have taken an interest in from the link I posted. Of the players I listed 5 of the 6 have been in on more than one meeting with the Jets including combines, private workouts, or team visits. It is also focused on players that have more years of collegiate starting experience, as opposed to one hit wonders. While it doesn't give the Jets any superstars, it will give them depth and solid players along the offensive line, as well as insurance for future players leaving. If you want a star pass rusher, I think the Jets may leverage this year to fill needs, and next year for superstars.
