Andre Smith visited the Jets on Monday

We are well past the point where there are many impact free agents on the market. Most of the players who sign at this point will simply be competing for depth spots in training camp. The Jets had one such player, offensive lineman Andre Smith, in for a visit on Monday.

Smith was a former Bengals first round pick. Believe it or not, he was actually the next pick after the Jets selected Mark Sanchez in the 2009 NFL Draft.

His career has been up and down and seems to be near the finish line. Smith is 32 and hasn’t started more than eight games since 2015. Most recently in 2018, he was part of Arizona’s poor offensive line and cut in season. The Bengals picked him up.

That is the connection to the Jets. New offensive line coach Frank Pollack was with the Bengals in 2018 and briefly coached Smith.

Smith likely would be a better option than Brent Qvale, but I’m not sure whether he can actually help a team at this point.
