The New York Jets have tendered offers to all nine of their 2019 exclusive rights free agents. Exclusive rights free agents are players whose contracts have expired prior to gaining three years of NFL service. Exclusive rights free agents, as their label implies, cannot negotiate with any other team unless the Jets fail to tender an offer to them. The nine exclusive rights free agents who were tendered are as follows:
QB Davis Webb
LB Frankie Luvu
S Doug Middleton
LB Anthony Wint
DB Jeremy Clark
WR Deontay Burnett
RB De’Angelo Henderson
OL Ben Braden
DL Bronson Kaufusi
Tendering offers to these players was expected and we should not read much into the Jets retaining their rights in these players at this time. With the off season roster at 90 players and prior to the free agent signing period and the draft, there is plenty of room on the roster and little downside to keeping any of these players as place keepers until better options present themselves. If better options are signed these players can be cut with zero dead money.
In any event, if any of the retained players are favorites of yours, at a minimum the Jets see enough value in them not to cut ties entirely, giving them a fighting chance to be on the team when the games count.
