Tomlinson was set to become a restricted free agent. The Jets did not offer him a one year tender, which made him an unrestricted free agent. Not offering the tender presumably allows the Jets to bring him back at a lower price.
Tomlinson has been a member of the Jets signing signing off Houston’s practice squad in 2016. Believe it or not Qvale was actually brought to the Jets by John Idzik in 2014. Against all odds, he has stayed with the team since.
I won’t say these are depth signings because “depth” implies the ability to play effective football for some period of time when called upon. That isn’t the case for either player. The best case scenario for the Jets would be for both players to be pushed off the roster in the preseason by younger guys with more upside.
