On a chilly December day at MetLife Stadium, the New York Jets defeated the Miami Dolphins, 22 - 21.
The first half was a wild back and forth affair. The Jets and the Dolphins each scored on three drives, with the difference being the Jets scored two touchdowns while the Dolphins scored all field goals. A couple of crucial Jets penalties extended Dolphins drives, and were the only thing standing between the Jets and an early blowout of the hated Dolphins. The Jets went into halftime with a 16 - 9 lead that should have been bigger.
In the second half the Jets couldn’t get anything going on offense as Darnold struggled, throwing one interception and almost throwing another while leaving multiple plays on the field. With the Jets offense bogged down the Dolphins just kept chipping away with field goal after field goal, until they finally took an 18 - 16 lead with seven minutes to play. Darnold then drove the Jets to a go ahead field goal with four minutes left as the Jets re-took the lead 19 - 18. The Dolphins answered with yet another field goal to re-take the lead at 21 - 19 as the Jets defense simply could not stop the Dolphins all day.
With the Dolphins leading 21 - 19 the Jets got the ball with no timeouts with one final chance to win the game. Sam Darnold hit Vyncint Smith for a huge gain on the first play of the drive and the Jets were in business. A pass interference call on the Dolphins set up the Jets with a first down on the Dolphins 38 yard line, and another Darnold pass got the Jets in field goal range at the 26. Sam Ficken then won the game with a field goal as time expired. The Jets won a thriller, 22 - 21.
With the win the Jets record improves to 5-8 on the year, with a road game against the formidable Baltimore Ravens on tap next week.
