As I frequently note, not all tackles are created equal in the NFL. Getting dragged past the sticks before pulling down a ball carrier on a third down play is a tackle on the stat sheet but not an effective play.
I like to look at situational numbers to see which guys are really making an impact.
Some of the most important plays to me are tackles that get the Jets defense off the field. These are tackles on third and fourth down short of the first down marker.
Using the Pro Football Reference Play Index, I tracked down these numbers for the Jets so far in 2019.

Of course your mileage may vary based on playing time and injuries, but it is no great surprise to see Adams at the top of the list. While his season has been somewhat up and down, he’s the best player on the defense and probably the best on the team. His impact plays have been noticeable.
Hewitt has been been inconsistent, but I am also not surprised to see him near the top of the list. Along with some rough games, he had some solid performances in the early going.
What do you notice about the list?
