USC denies the Jets permission to interview Kliff Kingsbury

NCAA Football: Texas Tech at Baylor Jerome Miron-USA TODAY Sports

In a surprising development, the Jets will not be able to interview USC offensive coordinator Kliff Kingsbury for their head coaching job. The school has denied the Jets’ interview request, and for some reason that matters according to Adam Schefter.

USC has balked at giving permission to the New York Jets and Arizona Cardinals to interview Trojans offensive coordinator Kliff Kingsbury, league sources told ESPN.

At last month’s NFL owners meetings in Dallas, league officials informed team executives that they now had to request permission from college athletic directors to interview college coaches. Not doing so would be considered “conduct detrimental” and the NFL then could dock draft picks from teams, sources said.

I would be interested to hear the rationale behind that rule because it doesn’t make a ton of sense to me on the surface.

In any event, it seems like you can cross Kingsbury off the list of candidates for now.
