Jets won’t “ break the bank” for Le’Veon Bell? The offseason rumor circus has begun.

Manish Mehta is out with a new article today suggesting the Jets might not go all out to sign soon to be free agent running back Le’Veon Bell.

Le’Veon Bell would be the weapon that Sam Darnold desperately needs, but it’d be foolish to believe that he’s a slam dunk to land in green-and-white. The Jets will not break the bank in free agency for the dynamic playmaker, according to sources.

People seem to be taking this to mean the Jets are out of the Bell sweepstakes. However, just a few paragraphs later, Mehta rebuts this notion.

That doesn’t mean they won’t make a fair and competitive offer. It simply means that they aren’t handing over a blank check for his services.

So the Jets won’t “break the bank” for Bell, but they will make a “fair and competitive offer.” Mehta also does nothing to define in dollar terms what the Jets would consider “breaking the bank” or a “fair and competitive offer.” It’s quite a scoop.

There’s a lesson here. Throughout the offseason you will come across numerous articles that provide you with no actual new information masquerading as news. Do your best to not read too much into them.
